I recently acquired a Lionel PW 2035 locomotive.  It runs and smokes well but needs some TLC.  I need to clean up some surface rust on the drive rods and decided to remove one from the engine.  I discovered that the bolt holding the drive rod to the crosshead is not a standard threaded fastener.  The Machinery's Handbook lists it as a metallic drive screw typically used for permanent applications.  I tried to reinsert it into the crosshead, but it doesn't go in easily.  It has a 5/32 hex head.  Here's a photo.

My question is, can I reinsert this screw without damaging the crosshead?  I would find it hard to believe that someone hasn't come across this type of assembly while overhauling a PW locomotive.  Happy New Year everyone!

You can reuse it,…..sometimes,…..the trick I’ve used to re-install these is to pack your nut driver with nuts so the drive screw is just at the edge of your nut driver. This allows to put direct pressure on the head of the drive screw, as you turn it in the corresponding direction …..it doesn’t thread like a normal screw, it goes in with one twisting motion. I always use a drop of blue loctite as cheap insurance ……
