Hi Folks,

My club has an older Legacy Base and Cab-2 that was donated.  The Base and Cab-2 are both version 1.2.  The Base and Cab-2 both work well on the club layout.

Yesterday, one of our club members brought down a Cab-2 that he purchased new in the box with a Base  at the recent York meet.  His Cab-2 is version 1.4.  He did not bring the instructions or his new Base.

His new Cab-2 (version 1.4)  could not find the club's base (version 1.2).  We confirmed that the club's Base was set to channel 1 and that the new Cab-2 was scanning for channel 1.

1.  Does the Cab-2 have to be operating the same software version as the base in order for it to find the base?

Our club member had two blue Lionel chips that came with his Legacy set.  One chip said Cab-2 Version 1.4 and the other said Base version 1.4.

We inserted these two chips into the club's Cab-2 and Base.  We were trying to see if we could upgrade the club's Base and Cab-2 from version 1.2 to 1.4.  We couldn't get anything to work regarding the upgrade.  Again, we did not have any instructions so we were blindly pressing buttons.

The club's Cab-2 and Base stayed at version 1.2 and worked just fine after the unsuccessful upgrade attempt.

I went to Lionel's website but was unable to find instructions to upgrade the software.  Perhaps I looked in the wrong place.

2.  Where can I find instructions on how to upgrade the club's Cab-2 and Base to the current software version?  I understand that the current Legacy version is 1.5.  We don't have any chips for the club's donated Legacy system.   We also need to find out how to upgrade our member's Legacy system from 1.4 to 1.5.

Unfortunately, we do have any nearby hobby shops that can perform an upgrade for us.  I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and I don't know anyone who knows how to do this.

Thank you for any help that you can give me.

Joe

That being said, V1.2 is not compatible with V1.4 and you will not find the base. V1.3 and above should work with versions higher but will be missing anything that the upgrades past it might have.

Here's an upgrade video for 1.3 but it works for all versions.

and a PDF Version.

If you need to create the system modules, that a little more involved needing the LSU software, the 1.52 download, and a PC serially connected to the Legacy base.

Try this part of the Lionel Site.  1.52 upgrade page.     The LSU software download page.      The LSU Manual.       LSU Home Page      v1.5x Manual.  Page 75 also has the upgrade instructions.

Marty I just upgrade to1.3 thanks for the video, I had these for about 5 years but now what should I up grade to ? I'm slow but moving forward.

I'd personally suggest that you upgrade all the Legacy remotes and command bases to 1.52.  I know of no reason you wouldn't want to be running the latest version at this point.

Perhaps someone already has the modules and can do a mass update at your club.  I keep a set of 1.52 modules in my bag just for this reason, anyone that wants an upgrade can bring their base and remote(s) to the club and update them.  If you have the modules, the update for a base and remote don't take more than a minute or two, it's very quick.

How many 1.5 versions are there? ....

1.5   &  1.51   &   1.52

Or, is 1.5 really 1.51?

I just spoke with Lionel to inquire about upgrading a 1.3 version I have. She said "version 1.5" modules are available from Lionel, and that black writeable modules to download 1.52 are available at dealers.

Jim

the latest is 1.52.

How or whom may I contact at Lionel to order the Legacy 1.52 upgrade modules?

I am running a MAC and have no way to download upgrade even if I can find the source.

I would appreciate any input here. I can get to the Lionel home page but cannot ascertain where to find an order form or a telephone number to call that others seem to have access to.

Thanks.

I was able to get through to Lionel per John's instructions. However, I was informed that 1.52 was only available through download.  Does anyone know of a source for acquiring these upgrade modules apart from a download? I cannot download onto my MAC and Lionel said that a download was the only option I had. I have only the blue modules for 1.3.

If it helps you, and if Lionel didn't mention it to you ..... Lionel does have the earlier version (1.51 ?) modules in stock @19.95 plus shipping.

I'd still look for a long term solution that doesn't involve shelling out $40 for one-time update modules, not to mention shipping added to it.  You're real close to Patterson NJ, and I know the guys at NJ Hi-Railers would gladly help you update your setup.  There are plenty of folks using Legacy that are pretty close to you in North Jersey, and I'll bet you can get the update done to 1.52 quickly and cheap or free.

If you want to come down to SE-PA, I'll update it for you.
