I'm thinking of going to Legacy control for my layout. I have been looking on line for the 6-14295 #990 setup. I'm confused about which is the latest version and how do I know which one to buy. I currently have 3 newer legacy locomotives that don't have modules. I've noticed that some setups have four modules some have two. I'm confused about this. I want the setup that gives me all the features built into my locomotives.

Any Legacy #990 command system can be updated to the latest software, and updates are free. The one you indicate is fine.
Thanks for the info. Its confusing. I've been reading posts here and other places as well as YouTube trying to learn as much as I can. I read an article somewhere that said earlier versions of 6-14295 had to be sent back to Lionel for updates so that threw me off as well.
The only version that had to bo back to Lionel was the very first Legacy from around 2007 with software version 1.0. That got upgraded to at least 1.2, and then you could use memory modules to upgrade. With software 1.3, you could use the Legacy System Utility (LCS) to write a module with the latest software to update the base and cab units. All later software versions could be downloaded, written to writable modules and updated. The so-called "black" module was the writable module, and I came up with a mod to the blue modules to make your own writable modules.

Curious as to what type rechargeable batteries are required when replacing them.

I have used Energizer rechargeable NiMH batteries for a couple of years with zero issues.
