My two WM RS3s are MTH RailKing Scale with PS3. They do not have the details you would find on an MTH Premier engine or the Atlas O, but they run and sound great! Also, they do not smoke and don’t have crew in the cab. I do not know about Lionel or other manufacturers

If the RS-3s were issued in the Premier line, I'd get several. The lack the "scale wheel" option, wheel/axle interchangeability and low-end cast-in details keeps me from making the plunge. The lack of a smoke unit makes no material difference to me. Mike, are you listening?

They sure are less refined/rounded in design. Lots of guys are posting MTH or other mfg's besides Lionel locomotives. Are the other mfg's a higher quality? I've never really looked at any of the others.

Mark did a really nice job of describing the MTH RailKing scale RS locomotives. I would like to add that the latest releases (last few years or so) DO in fact have smoke units. I own several of them and can confirm they smoke like crazy!
Sure, I would love to see someone offer a true-scale-sized and highly-detailed (think MTH Premier or Lionel Legacy level of features and details) RS-3 and RSD-4/5. In the meantime, the latest RailKing scale versions are a nice compromise and really good value (features vs. cost) for their typical selling price.

I nearly bought the recent MTH RailKing Scale RS locomotives but the previous runs of the models didn't have the correct hand rails on the front of the locomotive. I have been increasingly more interested in scale sized and more accurate models. Does anyone have any photos of the front of one of the models from the recent RS3 run?
