I built this coal tower model from a Gloor craftsman kit around 2000. It was the first craftsman kit that I built for my 12’-by-8’ model railroad. I doubt any Gloor kits are still available today.

An old photo. I scratched this many years ago. Not a prototypical PRR tower but I liked the design of a similar HO model. I usually have coal hoppers on the aft track and on the forward track, locos taking coal or sand. The tankers are temporally sharing tracks.

Here is one of mine. A combination of a Lionel kit,  built-up and some freelance scratch building. I like how it turned out.

Donald I didn't realize that Lionel offered the concrete coaling tower as a kit.  You've done a wonderful job building and detailing it.

Hey Joe. Yes they did. Obviously, it was before they offered the coal tower in the built up form. The Lionel kit number is 6-22936. Sometimes they show up on the bay. I had mine for a long time. The kit contained the tower, the unloading shed and also the small building. It was from 1998. You can see the directions HERE.

I had the built-up on my old layout and was going to use it again. But I wanted to paint and detail it. They are almost impossible to take apart and I broke a lot of pieces. Thank goodness I had the kit!

There are some O scale Gloor Craft kits on eBay every so often. I probably bought about 20 over that past 5 years or so.  Keep checking. They do pop up/.

I picked up this one from my local train store. A little worse for wear. I haven't had a chance to do anything with it yet. Definitely going to need to bust out the chalk.

GGD. coaling tower came different colors, pictured, redwood. (An out-of-the-box model). The not-to-scale steps were an issue.  Some modelers replaced the steps.  The counter weights, and chains, for the coal chutes, are part of the model, but have to be added.  Lighting is a two wire connection.  There were concrete foundations, from a different vendor, later. ?? Foggy head??,  track spacing was 5 1/2" center to center.

Just for fun, we visited our good friend Dr. Jack yesterday in the Nashville area and the pictures are of his coaling tower area. Enjoy.

Dr. Jack's layout is beautiful! I love the rich colors and it doesn't hurt that he has bright colored Milwaukee Road equipment strewn all about. Mr. Muffin has posted some nice videos of it as well.

I  bought these already assembled buildings at estate auction many years ago these kits are still being sold today  by K&P BRICK &BUILDING CO.as seen here Advertised in this months O GAUGE RAILROADING magazine run 316 Feb/March 2021.

This is my scratchbuilt 350 ton coaling tower based on two surviving Grand Trunk structures in MI:

Not sure why the yard is empty. I was probably painting clouds ☁️ or messing with my lights and this was a test pic.

Here is my Ogle Tower from GGD,  I replaced the out of scale steps/railings and weathered it.   

My coaling tower was made by David Duhamel at Crescent  Models. Bought it at York a few years ago.

Here's a picture of my Lionel Coal Tower, along with manual gantry  crane for now, I have the clam shell gantry crane for the area, trying to figure out how to run power.

Tom M: Your coaling tower sure looks like the classic Plasticville model.  It cries out to be super detailed and when professionally weathered will stand up against any big buck competitor in the same class!
