I have just three, an A-B-A set that pulls my eight-car City of Los Angeles train. The A units are the recent Legacy ones. The B unit is an MTH dummy. Incredibly, the B unit has the correct road number (949b) to go with the two Lionel A units (#s 949 and 950).

Great match for Lionel and MTH. Lee they look good. Nice Set.
Weaver units upgraded.
I don't know if you can find better looking E-8's than the Premiers that MTH made this year. I think Mr. Muffins Trains may have one or two of these left. These look so good you may tempted to give up on steamers.

Wouldn't that depend on the railroad being modeled? The UP E8 and E9 units have those "snow shields" over each of the engine cooling systems, on the tops of the carbodies.

Here are my new Legacy C&O engines.
I have two, both of them several years old.
MTH E8, Milwaukee Road. The paint scheme is correct for an E7, not an E8/E9. The Milwaukee Road had E9's, but no E8's. The cosmetic difference is trivial, something about the headlight bezel or the number boards. The E9's were delivered in UP yellow. They were never painted in either the lightning bolt or Hiawatha paint schemes. However, it's a really nice looking engine despite the incorrect paint job.
Then we have this pair of Weaver engines; I'm not sure if they are supposed to be E8's or E9's. They were originally UP, but some previous owner did a really nice job of redecorating them for Milwaukee Road. They don't match the K-Line passenger cars perfectly but I can live with the difference. You would see this much variation in the prototypes due to sun fading and paint batch variation. These have conventional operation; both units are powered. As I recall there is no sound. One of these days I will upgrade them to TMCC, but it's not a priority. The photo comes out really small on this page; click on it for a better look.

I know these are not as fancy as the ones already posted, but these Railking models look good to me. (and cost half as much). they also look better on my small layout.
Kevin,
Dont discredit your engines, I think they are awesome!!! The sound is the same As the premier units Also.

Here are a couple images of my Lionel PRR Legacy E8's from the recent run. These were shot in our house using some lights, a backdrop, and a reflecting plate I use for my Commercial work. Since we do not have a layout, I figured I'd shoot some images of our motive power, over the winter.
Shot with a 1DMKIV and 24-70.

Very nice detail on these Pennsys. The number boards really standout!

I have have at least one of each of these Legacy diesel pairs new in the box for sale. I can't wait for Lionel to ship the matching passenger cars! We are asking $739.96 shipped for them - the MSRP is $929.99.
As Scott suggested, we have MTH premier new in the box for sale of the NW blue scheme, FEC, SP, UP, and B&O in an E6.
In in our collection, we run DL&W, Erie, Milwaukee, C&O and NYC, both the grays, and the green in MTH and the Lionel NYC. They are all so terrific.
