The Like feature is missing from the topics. Is there another method to use to make references available back to the topic?

Hold you cursor over the little "red heart" symbol at the lower left.
I miss the date line for the postings!
If by “date line” you mean the time stamp, it’s still there.
But Rich, the "time stamp" is still there, however there is no "date" associated with it.
I'm thinking Steve might have meant the Liking of the topic itself, which used to look a bit different.
If memory serves, there used to be a button near the top of the thread, similar to where the "Follow" button is. hitting that would result in whoever hit it showing up in the field of Avatars at the bottom of the thread as people who had "liked" it. IIRC, when it worked like this, there was no "like" for the first post, if you wanted to "like" the first post, you would just "like" the thread itself.
The new thing with the hearts for the Likes seems to serve that purpose now, and Liking the first post seems to be the equivalent of Liking the thread. No more listing via Avatars at the bottom, but just like all the other posts in a thread if you care to hover over the heart, it should show the list of who's liked it (not sure why people would worry about that but.....) .
At least that's how it seems to work in my profile (I Liked the first post in a thread and my profile shows me Liking the topic itself). I don't do any of the automated following, email notifications, etc, so I can't say what it does in that regard.

For older threads, the date does seem to be there. It doesn't show up in these threads about the new forum format because they are only a day or so old.
I seem to recall this was like this for a while actually, only showing how many minutes/hours ago for a while until a day or so has passed. (I do agree it's a bit annoying though. I just don't think it's new or a huge deal at this point)
See this thread from earlier this month, it has dates.
-Dave
Yes, there IS a date with the time stamp. Here's screen shot from another - OLDER - post.
The posts within THIS thread won't show a date yet because they have all been posted today.
Rich,
Ah,,,,,,,that explains it. Thanks.
Respectfully, to our terrific colleagues who lead the OGR, it's time to reverse course and return to the former OGF format. We have all made mistakes in our careers. God knows, I have made my share. But, it never makes sense to double down on a mistake. This should be an easy fix, working with the web designers.

So the heart isn't a way to send your undying love to the person whose post you clicked on?
I'm sure Rich or Alan will say the same, but this is at the Forum Software level, not something they did at the level that they can do little "tweaks" to the look and feel. They have no control to the level of "put it back". There is no "put it back".
If you read some of Rich and Alan's posts in other threads it's frustrating to them when it happens too sometimes.
It could be worse. We still seem to have all of our archives, so at least they didn't do something forcing the format to change so much that all previous activity was purged, like happened many years ago in a change like this.

Irish rifle, what you suggest is not possible. We don’t write the code that runs this forum. There is no “web designer” involved here. It’s a software program written by Social Strata, the parent company behind Crowdstack. They did this upgrade, not us.

Are you paying Social Strata money? Be a demand customer and start complaining to them the way your end users are complaining. Remind them there are other businesses that do this that would love to accept your money.
If for some reason we all started complaining that the magazine pages were too glossy, would you tell us "tough... OGR doesn't make the paper" or would you find the right vendor that had the paper that was appealing to your reader?
By the way... That link up there is your quote Rich. Just in case you couldn't tell.
Along with other issues' How do you now respond to a particular post. I can post after the last post here which would be from Ron045 but don't see a way to respond to any of the post above his. How do I post a reply to Rich's or anybody else that posted in the past in the same thread? You know how the posters response would be copied and we would respond to it. Don't see a way to reply to a particular post. I knew things looked different but this is at least three steps backward.
Forest, just copy and paste from the post you want to reply to:
You know how the posters response would be copied and we would respond to it. (You can even insert your own comments as in the past.) Don't see a way to reply to a particular post.
As Rich explained in another thread, the "reply with quote" feature to which you refer has been omitted due to its habitual abuse by some forum members.
As we know, the "like" feature has been retained; so, I'm not sure about what folks are complaining about.

@Forest, please see @OGR CEO-PUBLISHER and @Rich Melvin response to the removal of the "Reply with Quote" functionality (which I find completely more infuriating than the occasional misuse and abuse)
I find those links annoying. I'd rather skip the post and move on to the next than click on the links. I hate clicking on links that send me somewhere unknown.
Not necessarily. I would agree with you if CrowdStack owns the data/archive. We don't know how OGR's contract is structured. But data is most certainly moved and migrated to new servers all of the time without issue.
Ron
Thanks Hot Water!
I completely missed that using my i-pad, scrolled right past it. Yes, it does the same thing as the "Like" button that was previously at the top of the post next to "Follow the Link". All of the 'Liked' posts will show up on your profile page under "Reactions", I find it a nice way to keep a quick reference link to go back to.
I hope all of you and your family's are doing well and are successfully weathering the circumstances we are currently experiencing...
Regards,
Steve
I wish we could go to a thumbs up icon for "Like". The heart on a RR forum with men mostly over 40 is ridiculous. Maybe that's good for the "Hello Kitty" community but seriously a Model Train forum?

I think it's fine the way it is. we are fortunate to have a free forum and should be grateful OGR is providing it and not worrying about little tweaks. To me the new look is clean and readable. I was on this forum in the beginning when you needed a separate site for photos you linked to that often disappeared. And video was unheard of then. So to me the whole thing is a big improvement.
Yet... You used the reply feature anyway. Hmmmm.
You must like it after all.
