Does anyone know what is going on with my polar express lionchief set? I will run the train for a little bit, turn the remote off, step away to go do something and come back, turn the remote on, and the train wont respond to the remote. I have to unplug the power pack from the wall and plug it back in then it will respond. Thanks in advance for your help.

Try changing the batteries in the remote
This is just a guess, but I think the engine may be going into a shutdown mode if it doesn't have a signal for a long period of time. does it continue to make sound/light up?

Yes it does light up well the rolling stock will be lit. The engine lights would not be.

Lights on rolling stock light because there is voltage on the track. They light independently of whether or not the locomotive is on or in shut down mode. Since you're getting 18 volts to the track to light the cars, the engine isn't responding either because it went into shutdown mode or there's a problem with either the remote or its batteries. Hope this helps.
Basically it is normal as designed behavior. G
