I just picked up one on eBay, it's a new old stock one from 1980. Is it metal? What's your experience?

Hi Dave: It's all plastic except for the cranks to raise and lower the boom and raise and lower the hook. It's good for a static display or for a child to operate (my daughter had one when she was very young, it's packed away after being replaced by a motorised version).
Its made from similar components as the postwar 282 crane. It is not motorized and does not have the magnet on the end,substituting a hook insteaad similar to Lionels crane car. When assembled and placed on the layout, it resembles the Lionel postwar 282 except it id manually operated. Looks pretty good on the layout in my opinion.
As Art wrote, it is mostly plastic.
It is basically a manual version of the 282 gantry crane.
