Lionel 0-8-0 switchengine clearance

I have one of the Lionel 0-8-0s, namely the Great Northern, and my layout has Ross Custom switches. The 0-8-0 crosshead hanger or what ever it is called, is hitting the top of the screw heads; and it is also picking the wire throw rod. Have any of you had theses same problems, and if so how did you remedy it? I am thinking of filing down the hanger to clear both obstacles. Thanks for your help!
