This is a tough one. The 1688 can be bought very inexpensively, and the cost of parts to get it to work may well exceed what you could buy a running example for. Unless you have an emotional attachment to it, or have parts, it may be smarter to just find another one in working condition.

 

One thing to note on the Lionel O-27 prewar engines is that the gear side of the driver is actually lower than the flange side of the driver. When using later O-27 switches or O gauge switches, or track crossings, the engines will ride up on the gear side, and stop, or reverse. They don't work with those switches or track pieces, only prewar O-27 switches and crossings. There are other modern track systems that they don't like very well either.

 

So, if you run prewar O-27 on O gauge, make sure you have a loop with no switches or track crossings, and you'll be fine.
