I picked up this Lionel 1689 set at the Lansing Model Train Show and Sale. It even came with a transformer and a whole lot of track. I had to make a couple of minor repairs but I got it running like a top. I think it's a neat little set.

Nice set.
I think so, too.

One of my favorite parts of the hobby is getting old stuff cheap because it's broken. Then fixing it up and bringing it back to life. Maybe I have some Frankenstein in me.
Very Nice!
Love that tinplate !
Great score! But where's Duke at? (I still watch that video!)
I have this very same train set....I can send you a pair of Marker lights for the engine...just send me a PM...Nice train and it was made for only two years, 1936 and 1937.

Have fun with the 1689E set....The 1689E is not as common as a 1688, so it is a neat Engine to have in your collection. Hope you hang on to it. Take care.
This post forced me to dig out my 1689E set, I also found a Sunoco tank car to go with the Shell tanker, same number. For now, prewar will reign on the test loop. Photo to follow.
Love it!
