Lionel 2012 Signature Catalog

I hit "SNEAK PEEK" and nothing more than the ready to run catalogs. Has anyone else seen anything?

It didn't come up the first time - did when I tried in on my computer..... the guys hoping for a Yellowstone will be disappointed - repainted "fantasy" EM-1's.....

BTW - did the C&O and Erie have Mikado's?

Same here. I hit the "SNEAK PEEK" and I get to the Lionel home page, but there is no link to the "SNEAK PEEK".

I got it up now....Boy I hope in the next catalog they might have a FRISCO Mikado like they had about 10 years ago. Only this time with LEGACY. Can't wait for the total catalog to come out. Thanks LIONEL for the "Sneak Peek".

The Erie had over 200 Mikados in three different classes  N1 - N3

The big question the "sneak peek" raises is what will the Blue Comet steam locomotive look like?  A head-on shot is on the cover but that locomotive is not among the pages we are given to peek at.

 

Previous Lionel Blue Comet Pacifics were generic with Blue Comet details like the sign on the front.  (By comparison, the MTH model was an accurate reproduction with the Wootten firebox.)  So the question is, has Lionel just added newer technology and maybe some details to their previous model or have they raised the bar and come out with a locomotive that really is a scale model of the prototype Blue Comet locomotive?

 

And when, oh when, is any manufacturer going to come out with accurate Blue Comet passenger cars?  (As some book put it, they like to rape the Blue Comet name.)  They love to use the name but they can't be bothered to make a model that is worthy of the kind of class the Blue Comet exemplified.

They killed the Northern Pacific Z-5! Its actually almost closer to a Z-4...

I like how it it was covered as a What if road name.

The Yellowstone just being a fantasy scheme was disappointing, but at least that's a bright side for my wallet. I'll stick with my 2000 model of the EM-1.

 

Still very interested to see what they're doing with Postwar this year.

Per the Blue Comet: I do believe that MTH made an accurate Premier JC Blue Comet Pacific,
as well as a RK version, but the RK probably is not all that accurate. I noticed the
scale MTH JC Pacific, not because I'm a JC fan, but because it is just one good-looking
loco, especially when it is not blue.

Per the Mikado photos above: the trailing truck is STILL upside down.
Maybe it's a Marvel Comics item.

I may be in for a major Lionel pre-order if a legacy Blue Comet is really coming...I have been waiting for this a long time.  I better start saving for it now...

 

Lionel just updated their sneak peak items. The Blue Comet along along with Southern Cresent and Alton are now shown. The Blue Comet Pacific shown is different then the one released in 2002. The other two pacifics look like reissues.

The blue comet on the cover has a feedwater heater, but the side view picture is missing the feedwater heater?  What's up with that?   The Crescent has it though.  Obviously, they used two different models for the same engine.  The blue comet better have feedwater heater or it's a deal breaker for me.

The tender looks wrong for the Blue Comet. It looks like the same as on the Mikado and the other Pacifics.

They better know before asking for pre-orders...otherwise I will be on the side line.  The tender does not look correct either like the other poster pointed out.  Let's hope it's just an error in the catalog and they will get it right.  I will definitely be asking at YORK about this.

 

Personally, i would be happy with the old 2002 tooling and the upgraded electronics and hopefully easier access switches and controls under hatches rather than on the bottom of the engine.

Lionel has two DM&IR steam locos shown. What the DM&IR had most were ore cars. Perhaps the people at Lionel will offer 4-car or 8-car sets of DM&IR ore cars to run behind the DM&IR steam locomotives. They might even offer a DM&IR double-sheathed boxcar, a 40' DM&IR flat car, and a DM&IR  Wood Caboose.

I got a similar response from Lionel.  I too want the Blue Comet, but really like the feedwater heater - kind of makes the model.  The Southern Crescent came this way in 2007 with the feedwater heater.  I will have to get that also.

Yes...the C&O #1062 would have been among a group of Mikados that came from the Pere Marquette.  They were given new road numbers and C&O lettering.  They were done away with in the early '50s.

So no news on the conventional classics series?

Has anyone noticed that Lionel had 2 different Sneak Peek catalogs today both being 12 pages. The 1st. had the UP 4-12-2's and the Traditional MOW Gang car on the last page with the silver GG-1. Which are not in the 2nd. and replaced by the Pacific's. And if anyone noticed how the Signature catalog is shaping up?

Problem is this is just a fantasy repaint of a generic light mikado. The C&O ex-PM Mikados (C&O class K-5) had a single air pump on the pilot, "flying" number boards at the top of the smokebox, and a much larger tender with six wheel trucks. The tender shown behind the Southern Pacific shown a little bit further into the sneak peak catalog is probably closer to the actual tender. Anyhow its not close enough to the real thing to waste $900 on.

My bank account is safe.  It may be different but it is still wrong - wrong engine, wrong tender.  It is so wrong they might as well leave the feedwater heater off.  Well, at least the trailing truck isn't upside down.  Absolutely no temptation to buy this, especially at that price.  The MTH Premier model is still far superior, regardless of the technology - it is an accurate scale model of the locomotive.

Unbelievable.  They won't know what the model will have until they get it.  You could not make this stuff up.  Is anybody at Lionel in charge?  I do not believe you would ever get this kind of response from Weaver or MTH or 3rd Rail.

 

Disappointing to say the least.

They have been trying to find new places to produce their steam locomotives since getting pushed out of their original Model Railroad factory in China.

Hopefully, Lionel will bring some engineering models to York and / or release a statement or supplementals to correct the final signature catalog with updated information.

Just an observation: Trainland/Trainworld's preorder announcement states that all these engines are for a March delivery. Sounds like they are already made and on the water. Good way to beat out MTH for when they finish their move or replace casting machine. Whatever the holdup is, Lionel had someone produce all these and will have them available soon.

I just heard back from Lionel again concerning the Blue Comet...

 

 

We will have the version that’s shown on the cover with the feedwater heater [of The Blue Comet].  The image on pg 25 is to be updated on the online catalog product finder.

I still want to see what the side view will look like before ordering, but now there is at least hope that it will be fantastic and I will be purchasing it.
