LCCA National Convention Recap Preview of 2012 Lionel Volume 2 Catalog

Allen Dayton (LCCA #6532), owner of HHW / AZT, recently attended the Lionel Collectors Club of America National Convention in Norfolk, VA. At the convention, Lionel gave a preview of new product that will be featured in it's 2012 Volume 2 catalog which will be available in August.

Here are Allen's notes:

**American Flyer sales have been through the roof!!! This is the fastest growing segment in the model railroading industry. Look for huge increases and excellent sales opportunities in 2013.

N de M Centipede?  I am both surprised and excited.  I hope it does not get dropped because that is one I will have to buy. 

I am in for all 3....And the American Flyer stuff...Interested in the Military Train. Wish it was the Postwar Pyro Sets.

I'm surprised no one's commented on this... 

Is this true?  I've looked on NS's corporate web site and haven't seen any news announcements regarding this.  Which road names are affected...all of them?  So there will be new paint schemes in the Lionel catalog.  Does that mean that the paint scheme on the coresponding MTH model will also change?  What happens if you've pre-ordered an engine based on a certain livery, and it's one of the road names that's undergoing a change?

The LV unit was repainted from yellow stripe, black pilot on the nose to warning stripes, red pilot. I think the font on the cab numbering of the NKP unit was also slightly altered after the fact.

Those are the only 2 I can think of.

Maybe it simply means the Lionel fanatsy versions of NS heritage paint is being replaced with the correct prototype versions.  I seriously doubt NS is going to repaint all their heritage units.

More than likely is the fact that NS removed some engines from service after originally being unveiled to touch up the paint and/or make them more acurate to the original RR's livery. Likely that is what is meant by this. I know the Lehigh Valley heritage engine had the nose repainted and reworked to further match the original LV paint.

Thanks Charlie and Marty! This isn't good,if thats an l3 mohawk set it could fit in well with the rest of my NYC stuff. On the other hand, my son has been wanting me to get a class J, I might nave to cave............decisions,decisions.

Don't you get it corporations do what they want. It doesn't matter how it effects cosumer. Catolog probably won't be out in august either.

Maybe NS finally fixed the Horse logo so it matches the way Lionel did it on the GenSet, About time they got going on that

Wow that's awesome! I am really glad they are going to have a Legacy Mohawk and a Legacy J class in the catalog. Only problem I see coming is it being over a grand for each set. Way out of my budget. 

American Flyer sales are through the roof!!!  That is great news for many of us who grew up on Flyer.  The Challenger must have a lot to do with Flyer sale strength.  The detailing on the American Flyer Challenger is on par with JLC and Vision Line Challengers and superior to the detailing on Lionmaster Challengers - even the most recent offerings.  Lionel needs to invest in making an oil tender for the American Flyer Challenger as their offering last year had coal tenders with the 3977 (3710) Challenger which should have been an oil tender.

Lionel has had the #611 "J" previewed on their Facebook page for awhile now.  (It's since been replaced with the NYC steamer; but if you look at the cover photos album, you'll see the "J" as previewed.)  So hopefully, that's a close representation of what will be produced.

Tops on my list from the preview are the Canadian Pacific DD35A's.  And I'm REALLY hoping those will be in the more traditional gray/brown/yellow paint scheme that would match that of the F3's from a couple of years ago (as opposed to the more modern, all-red CP Rail paint scheme used for the ES44 hybrid.)  If it's the former, I'm in for a powered and non-powered combo! 

Aside from that, I'll likely grab a couple of NS heritage units!

Today, I also called one of my favorite small hobby shops in the general area and placed an order for the recently-announced Atlas-O gunderson cars in the CSX livery -- along with a bunch of 45' containers!

Gosh... I miss the days when this stuff was a bit more reasonable.  Among the stuff I listed above, I'm already exceeding $2,500... and it's money that wasn't originally "in the budget".    Oh well... gotta keep telling myself these goodies will most likely all arrive in 2013 anyway!!!

I realize they would fall into the "what if" fantasy paint-scheme category for Canadian Pacific.  But that's OK.  I like being the CEO on my own railroad. 

Now on a completely different note... I'm glad to see Lionel offer another re-issue of the tank-train cars.  It should take the wind out of the sales from all the folks trying to make ridiculous profits on tank train cars in today's aftermarket sales.  Although they're not on my short-list of "must haves", it's nice to see hobby enthusiasts will be able to order a set at (hopefully) more reasonable price-points again.

Given the long list of folks who are already tripping over themselves to get one, I'd imagine Lionel will place a small premium on this puppy.  However, there's no reason it SHOULD retail for any more than the Mallet's or the recent UP 4-12-2's.  If Lionel makes a good production run of these, then it should price in right on top of their recent Milwaukee Road S3 Northern... but that would be wishful thinking.

I'm quite happy with the last scale "J" that Lionel produced (in the early 2000's I think);  so there are other goodies that are on my short list right now... despite the fact that it'll likely come equipped with more modern-day features like whistle-steam and maybe even cylinder-steam effects -- not to mention Legacy itself.

I do not believe that NS has made any changes to the 20 heritage units that were on display in Spencer on July 3 & 4. The hose of the Lehigh Valley unit was indeed repainted but that was cone before the trip to North Carolina.

One thing is for sure... the former Lionel NS heritage units -- as lovely as they are -- will likely be discounted heavily in order to move them out of inventory, 'cause the REAL demand will be for the upcoming models based on the more recent, actual NS heritage paint schemes.  Who's gonna pay $425-$475 for the former paint schemes when the newer paint-scheme units will likely be priced similarly?  So for those who may not be as particular about paint-scheme preferences (it really only applies to a couple of units though), it might be worth the wait to pick up a Pennsy heritage unit or two at bargain price-points.
