Like many, I was surprised and rather impressed to see the variety of 4-6-2 Pacifics being offered by Lionel in their 2018 catalog. Particularly the Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern 425.

While I may or may not get the locomotive, the auxiliary tender with freight sounds I most likely will. It's been awhile since Lionel has offered command equipped auxiliary tenders since the Union Pacific ones for the Vision Big Boy in 2014.

The thing that raised questions with me was what paint scheme it's going to be. Lionel is showing the Pacific in the current solid dark blue and black paint scheme, but the tender is in the older cerulean blue and gold trim paint scheme. It would make more sense for both loco and aux tender to have matching patterns, right?

Yes, but it appears this tender will not be command equipped. Dave, will it be? If not, please consider putting in a R4LC. It would be nice to control the clickity clack or possibly water refilling sounds on the tender.

Yes it would make sense, but sometimes, "sense" is not possible.

It has Legacy Control and an electro coupler so it would be command.

Hmmm. You would think they would be shouting this from the mountain tops. I thought it would be conventional which is why I did not order it.

Lionel; PLEASE make sure that the engine and aux tender color match! In addition, please put some water and coal sounds on this car. It would increase the play value EXPONENTIALLY!

Maybe someone will bring it up on Ryan & Dave's show. While I do think MTH's model of the 425 will meet everyone's wants better - since it'll be offered in both color designs - I am very interested in this aux tender that could be added on to either Lionel or MTH's model, as well as Lionel's StationSounds full vista dome car.

Did the Reading and Northern run Pacific type locomotives? Even if they didn't its nice to see that roadname.

The R&N Is a modern, freight hauling railroad. They do an active passenger business, usually with diesel power. The owner of the railroad is a steam enthusiast and runs the REAL 425 a few times each year. They are also working on their 4-8-4 with hopes to have it running within the next year or two.

They also have a little 2-6-0 (or similar) on display.

Reading & Northern 425 has two auxiliary tenders. Lionel's is the first. As CarGuyZM10 posted, this one is spotted on a siding at Jim Thorpe across the street from the post office and serves as a billboard. I have heard that it is a Pennsy E6 tender. Note the water scoop.

Some time ago the R&N acquired the late George Hart's ex-CP 4-6-0, passenger cars, and an auxiliary tender - a Taylor tender from a Reading Camelback. Mr. Hart used it with Reading Shop Switcher 1251 (now displayed in The Railroad Museum of PA at Strasburg) on excursions on the Ma & Pa. The R&N prefers it because it fits on the turntable with 425 at Jim Thorpe. The first tender was bigger and had to be turned separately. The ex-Reading tender has been painted to match 425. Here is a closeup of the herald. The first one has "billboard" lettering. Reptd425&765JimThorpe 004

It's in the description.

Coincidently, Rural Network channel featured the Pacific last night - "Blue Mountain Odyssey." Some great shots of the training traveling through Topton and Fleetwood PA - very close to where I live. The videos were mostly from the 1980s, the engine looked black to me, but, maybe it was grime and soot. From the video GJP posted it clearly was blue - and a nice shade at that. Great video!

Yes, but the description says "freightsounds: hear the clickity clack." Nowhere does it say "hear the water filling sound controlled by the cab 2, cab 1 or cab 1l" so I thought I would ask.

I cannot comment on the deco as that's not my department. I can say though that the tender will have command like the Big Boy aux tender had. Electrocoupler and directional lighting control. As for the sounds, that's yet to be determined. If it does have any command controlled sounds, they will be limited. It was originally conceived as just having clickety clacks (similar to the PS-1 boxcars we did a few catalogs ago). We may add the coupler sound and possibly water fill sound.

From the photo you can see an coupler on the front of the tender as well. As Dave said it appears that this is intended to be used as an "auxillary tender" as opposed to an "optional tender".

You would have all of you "meat and potatoes" sounds in the coal tender behind the loco so adding water filling sounds in the auxillary tender would be redundant.:

Maybe this is what Lionel is trying to offer? @Dave Olson Abiet with some confusion of paint styles:

Not my thing, but this could turn out to be one sharp setup!

Not redundant if you don't have any legacy engines with the "fill" sounds.

You will already have water filling sounds in the "primary tender".

If the chuff out of the stack can be broadcast back from the "primary tender", surely water sounds from the primary tender can be used as fill sounds for the auxillary tender.

It was painted black at that point when the video would have been recorded.  The blue is a more recent addition, though I'm not sure exactly how far back that paint scheme goes.

I wonder if Lionel will make an open air car as seen in the video behind the tender?  Please Lionel do this for us R&N GUYZ!!!!!????

I would be ecstatic if the regular blue coaches were correct. The former Reading round roof passenger cars have yet to be done in O scale, neither have correct DL&W cars like the R&N uses on most excursions, but at least lionel added 4-wheel trucks to some of these cars where applicable.
