That engine is a Nicholas Smith Trains exclusive, it's not a catalogue engine. If you go to their website you'll be able to see it.

I guess you can say so yourself. They're offering 21" Santa Fe Passenger cars to go with the new Alco PAs.

yes 21" Santa Fe sets. 4pack+2pack+2pack+sounds dome car

The K4's were both striped, one long haul tender and one like NS version except as a funeral train set.

Anybody catch the road numbers for the Southern 2-8-4's. Site went down before I caught that.

The UP Excursion expansion pack is good, but still no "Art Lockman" (21" Baggage car), "Howard Fogg" (Dormitory car), "Lynn Nystrom" (18" Baggage car), or Business Cars.

I'd love a Legacy Scale 3985. The LionMaster ones are cool and all, and are cheaper and can go around tighter curves, but I'd personally like to see a scale 3985.

My original post was not to discus product in the catalog. I misunderstood Lionel’s comment about one catalog. I thought the meant only one catalog per year. They obviously meant that all products will only be in one catalog not one catalog per year. Pretty stupid on my part.

It meant all their early 2018 catalogs were in one. Meaning the Christmas, American Flyer, Signature book one, and Ready To Run catalogs we're all in one big issue.

If I want to get something in that paint scheme, I'll go buy a MTH Railking 49er streamlined 4-6-2. That paint scheme does not belong on a challenger, period. I normally like the "different", unique, or funky stuff but this would be a no for me. I can't buy it anyway cause all my curves are 0-31. Even so, that paint scheme just looks ugly on it. When Lionel did the daylight cabforwards, those looked great, even the AC-9's in daylight paint looked great. However, let's be honest here, in my opinion, it is VERY hard to screw up a daylight paint scheme. I've yet to see that happen. Although I do wonder what else Lionel has in store for us all.

My response to that awful paint job on the attempted Hiawatha-ized S3 was to purchase a MTH F7 Class Hiawatha that is painted in the correct colors. I love Lionel trains but they need to get the colors and decoration correct and pull back on these outlandish fantasy schemes. That Challenger looks like Bozo the clown should be the engineer.

If Lionel, at some future time, would manufacture a LC+ or Lionmaster version of this much discussed UP fantasy challenger, at a price point around $700, I definitely would order one, a great engine to pull my politically incorrect military, booze, and hot babe train.

While I'm no fan of the paint scheme, the same posts were going with the last fantasy paint job and Lionel sold a lot of 'em.  So I suspect they are laughing right there with you...driving to the bank to deposit the ca$h.

If that's the case I'll be laughing with them... Actually, I'm laughing now knowing an iconic steamer such as the Challenger is being "SCALE" modeled in a horrid color scheme with a MSRP of $2000.     Anyone ever ask themselves, what do you do with it when its time to sell?    IMO, Out of the 8 versions of the Challenger listed in the catalog, the one outstanding sleeper that has any possibility of appreciating over time is the pilot model.  

Did anyone grab an image of the NS 8520? Thats on my list for sure.

Well, there is always a market for everything. Some people buy certain things, some don't. See how much they do with it, I know its not my cup of tea.

Lionel did this one in 2005. Not exact...but OK.

And as an individual who grew up with Santa Fe blue and Yellow and SP Scarlet Red and Gray, the Kodachrome scheme = disgusting.

Then they have to have O scale C&O Chessie gondolas, DT&I gondolas, EJ&E gondolas, and South Shore Gondolas.

I will have to spread out the gondolas over a few months.

This one almost makes up for the challenger, it's brand new and I already really like 8520.

When I was a kid, many moons ago, Lionel made a girls train, pastel pink Locomotive and pastel colored cars, and it sold for under $50. At an auction 10 years ago, that same set, in good condition, went for $5600. I was so surprised. I thought at the time  that set was unrealistic, never bought it. DUH? So, that being said, this unusually distinctive UP Challenger, feature rich, very Colorful,  will, down the road, probably be worth a Fortune, to those that truly Collect... I am a player for the new Brass Hybrid. 

I attended the Lionel Collectors Club, LCCA, Convention in Chicago, and the Preview of the new 2018 Lionel Signature Catalog-Volume 2 was Exciting. In my opinion, I really like the Fantacy Schemes made available to the toy train enthusiast, as every layout, collection, thoughts concerning the Hobby, are all different.  Happy Collecting....

The girls set from 1957 was a dramatic failure from a sales standpoint. The reason the set became a collectors item decades later was because so few samples survived. Most of the unsold sets were broken up and repainted after Christmas 1957. 

At $2,000, this gaudy Challenger as a collectible will not enjoy the same treasures status. Buy it if you like it, not because you think it will be a valuable rarity. 

Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder, one mans trash, is another mans treasure. Example, the fairly recent Lionel Legacy Southern Pacific Cab Forward, painted in the Daylight Paint Scheme. It turned out to be a huge success.  I personally like the new Challenger in this colorful paint scheme. Also, collector items are not made, actually, it just happens. So, to go back to Lionel, and the girls set, they were trying to say, it’s OK for girls to collect trains to. ??? I think Lionel is simply reaching out to attract a new audience...Happy Railroading....

Well said Larry, which I think I sort of was trying to say. It really depends on what you like, or what you think is eye catching or such. One thing I know I would love Lionel to do would be the Blue Goose. I only have Santa Fe F3's in my collection(shame on me some would probably say) which I would gladly rectify with the Goose. When I was a kid, I believe my Uncle had one on his shelf. I really did love the S2 Turbine, but the Goose fascinated me just sitting on the shelf(unless it was some other odd colored locomotive?).

MTH has done several runs of the Blue Goose. If you’re interested in a limited interest locomotive, go for it. Lionel isn’t likely to create fresh tooling for yet another one. Here’s mine:

Just caught 8520 in Northumberland yesterday, by far this locomotive ranks up as my third favorite ( NS 911, NS 6770, and now NS 8520). Will have to pick one up when they come out.

All they need now is the Dash8.5CW that has been running with 8520, the 8501.

With only one engine ever being produced and Weaver then MTH (multiple times!) producing it if Lionel does make this we'll know production costs versus units are waaaaaayyyyyyyy less than we have been led to believe!

I hope the new Dash 9s will have scale fuel tanks.

Nice to see Dave Olsen’s Western NY roots creeping into the product line! Also, the kitchen cars with sound offer different sound packages whether they are stopped or moving. Probably will go for a couple NYC bunk cars and the tool and kitchen cars as well.
