Unless Lionel decides to change this at a factory level you're not getting a special run / different tender out of a dealer. The justification of running a run of 25-50 tenders including frames, trucks, shells, etc isn't even close to financially reasonable. I would assume that Lionel explored what options are available to them in terms of tender tooling and if this is what they settled on, then this is what they feel is the best option they have available. This is one of those situations where I think you settle, or you're going to be scratch building a tender and transplanting electronics.

I’ve twisted arms in the past to get things changed. Not as big an arm as a tender but twist I have.

the trick is to make people aware and for the people to demand what they want. Just saying this is how it is deal with makes them think it’s ok. But when you push for excellence the seller and buyer both win

It hasn't not been done though. Nicholas Smith had a custom run of PRR K4's with E6 tenders. Although, I think this was the same year as the Harding Funeral Train which featured K4 with E6 tender.

That being said, the USRA engine itself is so much longer that 31 that it still wouldn't look right. You can put lipstick on a pig....

Wow, I thought I was the only one that would care about this lol.  That's great that there are so many 31 fans out there.  I was super excited to see this engine in the book but that tender is brutal.  If they don't fix it, then I will have to modify one.  However, if enough people reach out to Lionel perhaps maybe they'll listen.  Keep up the fight!  The mogul tenders would look soooooo much better on this engine than what they have pictured!

There seems to be a delicate balance between what locomotive size and electronic features.

Dave mentioned on the live stream that in order to get a more accurate offering of 31, then they would not be able to jam the electronic features in. Seems like they could it like the 150th anniversary 4-4-0 where the locomotives do not have sound or smoke - not sure if people would still bite for these or not.

I think that we would get a scale N&W 475 before a scale 31 out of Lionel. Those N&W 4-8-0's have a large following because of 475's Strasburg fame and the Abington Line's fame.

31 isn’t necessarily something I need to have. But I’d definitely be more interested in the 0-6-0s if they had a mogul style tender. I’m sure with set up costs, they have a certain number of tenders that must be run to make it economical. But maybe some other 0-6-0 custom runs with the mogul tenders would help

I’d be more concerned with what’s in them as far as electronics. They said it’s a tight fit. I’m still peeved about the last run of 0-8-0’s that came with the Flyer board in them. They lauded the fact the engine now had a tether that would pretty much eliminate stalling. At the speed it travels. Stalling is not a problem. Slow speed switching is the problem.

I seem to remember information indicating only a small number (11 or 12 percent of the production run) of the Legacy Mogul engines had been returned for repair, not that only a “few” were defective.

I have a Lionel Mogul from that production run and somehow missed the boat on having the issue addressed. I am not really sure when it happened, suddenly people on the form were talking about the mogul repairs in the past tense instead of being something down the road.

Yep, I know that Pete fixed at least a couple, and I saw other folks with issues they were working out.  I got mine for $300 NIB, so I took a chance on being able to get it running.

Ah got ya.  It looked pretty legit, I was checking all the stores that I knew that did custom jobs lol.

I heard the legacy moguls had some issues but the TMCC ones were great.  I don’t think it had to do with the size of the tender, probably some electronics issue.

I fixed three of them myself and helped two others fix theirs with a 20 cent bushing that was omitted from one of the siderods on each side. If there were other issues, these five didn’t have them.

Where did you get this bushing? Mine did not get sent back either and runs ok, but if there is something it is missing I would like to fix it. Is it an easy fix?

Te first pair I got from Lionel but had to make the rest myself as they are NLA now. They were used in the TMCC engines but left out of the later Legacy engines and cause the rods to bind and even break. See how much play the rods on the front driver has vs the rear pair.
