Hello everyone,

Can you guys fill me in on the Lionel Chesapeake & Ohio diesels? What I is know is they were produced around 1999. Saw a couple on Ebay used that went for $180 which did not seem like a bad price (should have acted). Other than the used ones on Ebay why do these command such a high price brand new ($699)? Is it just supply and demand, very few were produced, something special about the engine's guts? Or is anything with C & O on it is just golden? They do hold an appeal to me: the era, the paint scheme. I have C & O on my brain......I must have them!

The MSRP is because these are command equipped with dual motors.  I do not have this set, but have a F3 set so equipped from the same year.  With the two strong Pulmor motors and Magne-Traction, they pull very well.  The RailSounds are very nice in the F3s and it has an awesome horn and I love Pulmor motors.

 

I don't think it is a matter of the C&O label making this set golden.  The C&O did not have F3 locomotives.  That doesn't matter though, this is a nice paint scheme and F3s are a favorite of many...I have a C&O F3 set myself in RailKing.

 

Maybe someone can let you know if this set had low production numbers or something.  I hope you get a set, it is very sharp.

Sometimes it's very deceiving to base value on what you see on the Bay. Pricing can be all over the place, and it's a crapshoot anyway. I don't know what the $180 price was, because I've never seen TMCC/RS Lionel F-3s go for anywhere near that. And the $699 was just some daydreamer listing his engines. Keep looking - most of the time you can get F-3s (new condition) in the $280-330 range.

 

I had this C&O set years ago, with the matching cars, and it is indeed a beauty.
