Hi all,

while at the WGHOT show in OAKS this past weekend a fellow LCCA member was looking for info on a Lionel 402 set he had.

It was all BLACK CRACKLE paint on all the cars and the engine 7 pieces in all.

He bought it at a local Pa hobby store 30 years ago and was told it was from a Phila. dept store. Of course no boxes.

He was told it was 1 of only four sets.

It was not a repaint we checked all the tabs on the cars he brought and they were not removed or bent back.

Any info would be appreciated.

Yes, Lionel did make black crackle.

For your set, I found no other info. The info I found a 402 freight set is it was listed as Outfit 406E and contained a 211, 212, 213, 214, 215, 216, and 217. but lists them in their normal colors, mojave for the engine, the early Lionel prewar colors for the cars. No mention of black crackle.

However, your consist is different than what I found listed, so who knows. It's 90 years old and a lot can happen over that much time....

Questions that boggle the mind:

Does a 402 need a tender to haul extra electricity?

If so, would it be in solid or liquid form?

And exactly how does that drawbar couple to a 402's latches?

Perhaps it's an "X" tender with a latch coupler on each end?

I wonder if its a vandy or coal type?

...perhaps you meant a 400 steam locomotive?

Hi Sal

I'm john with the 402e crackle black freight set that we met at oaks. I took a ride to glenn stinsons home for his evaluation.  He thinks they are a repaint.  Thinking outside the box is it possible lionel or another company which made standard guage pre 1941 made this set as a one off. I would just like to know its origin.  I,m sending pictures to you hoping somebody knows something.   Thanks John

John, the train set is really beautiful.  Who ever did the crackle black paint job did a very fine job, it's just gorgeous.

Lionel did a crackle black, but it was a late color, well after the 402.  I'm away from home and don't have my reference books handy, but I believe it was used on the 400 and 408.  I'm quite sure only locomotives, and I believe only those two. Someone could check me on this.

The black paint on your train isn't as old as the trains: it's flawless, no scratches, no wear, while the brass shows an old patina and the wheels show rust.  That mismatch alone says it's a later paint job.

That is one spectacular one-of-a-kind set, and who ever did it was a real craftsman, but I would feel certain it did not come that way from Lionel.

Well hi

John had stoped at our shop Saturday with the set.

i looked it over and it is one that was repainted.

the set looks great. The 402 was Lionel that had been gone over and had new wheels put on when Mcoy was making wheels In the Late 70s and early 80s

The fright cars were done in the crackle paint and done well.

the work train set that someone made was very nicely done.

I would say that personally I liked it my self and wood leave it as is.

i would put it in my collection as it is.nice conversation pice.

John thank you for bring the set in for us to look over.
