The way to use the FIX-IT flywheel is a bit kludgy, I just manually center the magnet ring and glue it to the flywheel.  However, that's only if it's a real PITA to get the motor out (as it is in this case).  If it's easy to get the motor out, I glue the magnet ring to the old flywheel and press the flywheel back on.  I only use the FIX-IT flywheel if I don't feel like attacking the puzzle trucks.

It's a total mystery what Lionel was thinking when they specified the measurements of the FIX-IT flywheel!

Well close but no cigar.

Be advised that the fix-it flywheel does not fit the replacement magnet ring.

Till another day.

Likely a few ways to do this but I use spacers between the magnet and the fixit flywheel.

Measure the ID of the magnet and OD of the Flywheel where the magnet goes, divide the difference by two to compute the spacer thickness. A business card is close. Cut four pieces about a 1/4” wide. Attach the magnet with CA let it set. Remove the spacers and fill with space with epoxy. I used standard long set JB Weld that will settle evenly in the space. Wait at least 12 hours before mounting on the motor.

Hello Gunrunner, thanks for the info on the Lionel Smoke Unit Resistor from DigiKey, Yageo SQP500JB-20R. If you don't mind, I just want to verify any recent changes before I order. On one of your previous post, you suggest to use the 2 or 3 watt resistors and I noticed that these are the 5 watt. Please confirm that the 5 watt is the correct one.

Thanks, Mike

You missed an important step.  Finding the 2W wirewound resistor with no coating is next to impossible, I suspect that Lionel and MTH special order them.  So, I take these 5W resistors and crack the ceramic coating off in a vise.  Just put them in diagonally and apply a little pressure and out pops a perfect smoke resistor.  I used to buy the 2 or 3 watt ones with the thin ceramic coating, but they were a PITA to knock the ceramic off with a wire wheel, so I found a better way.

Edit: I forgot to mention, make sure you have your safety glasses on, the pieces of ceramic sometimes come out pretty fast!
