You will certainly have to take the shell off.
This unit has the magnet and it may be in pieces....or if you are fortunate it may still be present and not broken. In that case it can be glued back on to the flywheel. Do not attempt to run it until you get inside.
I believe the front truck has to be loosened to get at the 2 screws on either side hidden by the truck. The other body screws are easy to get at.
As for the smell, not sure. Could be the smoke unit because this unit has the smoke regulator which is prone to failure and Lionel no longer produces. Interesting with this unit is that Lionel did put in an 8 OHM resistor at the factory ......not the often used 6 OHM resistor which really put stress on the smoke unit and caused it to fail. Lionel did recommend using an 8 OHM resistor but as I mentioned this unit already has it.
Nice looking set. I have one and it functions well. I had to glue my magnet back on the flywheel using epoxy.
Good luck and keep us posted.
If it's not moving at all, it's not the Odyssey I magnet ring. That ring coming unglued or breaking off results in a runaway as soon as you crack the throttle.
If smoke is a problem, for TMCC locomotives you can go old-school and rewire the smoke unit without the regulator directly to the R2LC smoke output. You have to change the resistor to a 27 ohm smoke resistor as well for that option.
I got to them two screws under the truck I assume the yellow part of the body separates from the the bottom brown belly , But it doesn't budge , don't want to scratch it , got all screws out. The smell is like a burning coming from the area where the battery go's in. I have 18 volts on the track ,threw DCS var 2 and Lionel brick , in tandem with legacy cab 2. I have three other tmcc engines with no issues. smoke unit works, it started up ran fwd not backward but tripped 180w brick started it up again tried to run it backward tripped brick . still has burning smell
If you have all the screws out you have to gently begin to separate the two sections (shell from frame) It has likely not been opened for some 20 plus years so it may well be tight. If I remember correctly there would be 8 screws to remove, the two you have found under the front truck, two at the very front and 4 towards center/rear.
Once free look for a few connectors that will have to be released to fully remove the shell.
We will know more once you have the shell off.
The 1st pic wires melted together 2nd pic is where grey wire comes from and smoke and heat ,3rd pic is where grey wire go's to.
