Anyone know where I can find the parts that go under this little metal plate. I recently got a Lionel 681 that is missing all the smoke generation parts. I can find a smoke unit and arm but dont know exactly whats under the metal plate I have circled in the pic below. One video says its the magnet for the magnatraction. Havent been able to find that part anywhere, or a good exploded diagram anywhere for a 681 that denotes those parts. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Go to trainz.com. Under the "CONTENT" tab, select "exploded parts diagram". Enter 681. All parts are pictured. The smoke unit is near the bottom.

For the 681 the exploded parts diagram Bill mentions will show Lionel 681-21 Magnet Alnico #5.
The train tender has it, 681-21, in stock for $5.
I looked at the trainz.com diagram. I have a 671-RR which I understand is a 681 made during WWII without magnetraction due to parts restrictions. If I put that magnet in the 671-RR, will that give it magnetraction?
Sorry didn’t mean to hijack the thread, but my question kinda fits in.
No. At a minimum you would have to change the axles to stainless. Also, the wheels would have to be sintered steel, not die cast. Compare the parts list for the 671 and 681. Anything with a different part number would have to be investigated on the RR engine to determine what was actually used and the significance of the difference.

671RR was made during the Korean War. ( 1952 ) well after WWII. If you really want magnetraction, there’s a ton of 681 chassis available on the secondary market. You could also contact forum sponsor Trainz parts dept. and inquire about a whole chassis less motor. That would be the easiest thing to swap.
