I just saw a post on EBay that this engine runs on AC only. I have a Fastrack layout and am using a ZW transformer. I tried to run the engine but it doesn’t work. Am I using the wrong power for it? I am not the best with electronics so I wanted to know. It is the engine from the James Gang set.

It runs on DC only and you are using AC power.
The James Gang set was DC only, in spite of what EBay says.

Okay so how do I run it if it is DC only?
You need to purchase a DC power pack. DC power packs are sold at stores selling HO and N gauge trains. You could also purchase a AC to DC converter at a good electronics store. However, I think your best option is my first suggestion.
I just realized that the set came with track and a transformer. I didn’t look at it but I bet it is there.
What you really need is Lionel part number 600-0103-001. This is a simple drop-in board that will convert your engine to AC operations with a three position reverse too!

Installing a bridge rectifier between the pickups and the motor would be another very low cost option that would allow you to run it on AC power forward only. The reverse unit mentioned by Jon would probably be the nicest upgrade though.
I found the transformer that came with the set and it does have both AC and DC connections. I will give it a try either tonight or tomorrow. I was able to print out the instruction manual from Lionel for this set. Thanks to everyone for all the input and help.
You should find that the AC connections are labeled for accessories while the DC are labeled for the track.
The DC is variable voltage. The AC is fixed, probably at 12V
Here are few pictures of my Lionel 8005 that I painted and dressed up and added a bridge rectifier and switch to allow ac operation and switch between forward and reverse manually. It is an easy modification. And I think the paint job perked the engine up.
