There's no doubt that your experience is typical; Legacy engines have far better minimum/"crawl" speed performance than MTH engines. The real question is why that is so. It must be some basic characteristic of the MTH system because I've had the same experience with PS1/2/3 models. I suppose it could be the gearing or tach reader but my guess is that there's something else in the electronics that causes it.

 

That said it doesn't make all that much difference to me as I have got used to running my MTH engines at no less than about 8 scale MPH (according to the speed readout on the remote) and the PFA feature has more play value than Lionel's sequence control. But Lionel engines are definitely the majority of what I have.

note that one speed step for Lionel Legacy engines is not equal to 1 Scale Mile per Hour used on MTH products. At the speed I run my engines (usually less than 20 smph) there are three speed steps per SMPH. Note as well that while many MTH engines will run slower than 3 smph, many MTH engines will run smoothly only at 3 smph or greater.
