I have a 97 coal elevator that has red speckles on both sides of the moving coal bin, which is black Bakelite. They are evenly distributed on both top and bottom. That couldn't be from an accident while doing other painting.
My question is whether this is a manufacturing defect. Was there something in Lionel's process that caused those speckles.

Lionel made those parts (and many others) with leftover ground Bakelite pieces, so it is somewhat common. The 160 bin is most often seen. See here.
Thanks for the input. I'm glad to know that the speck won't prevent me from listing it on ebay as C-7- condition.
