I just recently purchased the Lionel Conventional Classics Berkshire Freight Set. Is it common for the engine to make a distinct clicking sound? Seems as if it's in synch with the smoke puffing.

You are probably hearing the lever hitting the piston on the puffer smoke unit.

I have run a few of these CC Berkshires and the click is normal, its the smoke unit lever. I will add that these are one of the best runners I have ever had and the whistle is outstanding.

Next train show, pick up a 2026-44 spring. It is very fine and closes to full compression. On your work bench, remove the Berkshires shell. Loosen the smoke unit and lift is straight up. As it begins to come off the smoke piston, hold the piston with your other hand and continue lifting the smoke unit. Insert the spring large side up inside the chamber and then slide the piston back in. Close everything back up and test it - the clicking noise should be gone.
