I just purchased a used command control system with a cab1 controller. I believe it was made around the early 2000's.The system seems to work as expected but I noticed there is no on/off switch on the cab1 controller. Is it alright to leave the batteries in for periods of non use without draining the batteries ?

Yes. The remote goes into "sleep mode" if the buttons aren't pressed for awhile.
If you're going to store the remote for a long period, remove the batteries. If the "period of non-use" is weeks instead of months, it should be no issue to leave the batteries in place.
