Need help. Bought this lionel C&NW F-3 ABA at Wheaton Show. No box so am trying to find out its Lionel 6-xxxxx number and cataloge date so I can tell what features it has. Two motor power A unit is cab #4067A, dummy A unit is cab #4086C, and B unit is #305. All are used but in great shape with what looks like either factory yellow and green paint or a very professional repaint. Decals also appear factory. Rear of the A units and both ends of the B unit are black unpainted plastic. The lower areas(trucks/fuel tanks etc) of all units are black. No screen tops. B unit may have one electrocoupler. Units do not have cables between them. Power unit and B unit have small switches on the bottom. What are these for?

I can find what look like similar items in the 181xx and 36xxx (SF,WP,NYC etc) but no C&NW. Was this part of a set or maybe a special order by a Hobby Shop or RR model Club?? Has anyone seen another one?

Thanks, Bill Potterton

I've never heard of Lionel-produced CNW F-3s. The only ones I know of are the TCA Midwest Division shell repaints produced back in 1977. These were Lionel shells, but an outside company would have done the decoration (these special issue repaints were frequently done by outside companies). Since you have a B unit also, most likely what you have are some custom painted jobs.

Thanks for the comments. I have also seen the TCA midwest shells. Mine are not these. A closer look at thy "Chicago and Northwesrern" side print shows a decal, not the factory type heatstamp or paint spray so I guess it is a repaint -- but a very professional job.

Nice addition for a C&NW fan -- me. I will now try to figure out what features it has. Looks like some mid-2000's electronics (TMCC ??), electrocouplers on the power unit and one end of the B-unit, and some sound.

Thanks again,

Bill
