>>>Why is there no more engines being released with the moving bell? I have not heard of any issues when it comes to this feature malfunctioning... I think the moving bell is the single greatest new feature that blows everyone away and everyone wants it.<<

My guess is, six or seven years between reissues creates enough demand without adding to the expense given these latest reissues are not produced in large numbers.

From what has been written here, the legacy upgrade itself seems to be enough to make the sale.  Probably saving the rest for the next reissue.

I have the last GS-2 with RS-5.  I love that engine. Runs & sounds awesome. No way in life would I sell & upgrade for legacy alone..

I have no doubt we will see the swinging bell, and the whistle steam effect, or more locos in the future.  Frankly though, given all the turbulence among the supplier chains in China, etc., I imagine Lionel and others are reluctant to get too innovative too fast right now.  But it is such a nice, fun feature  . . . it has to have a future.

I respectfully disagree. Once the technology is there and available, its hard not to expect it on future product. Especially when prices are on the rise. Reproductions are OK if you missed the first run, but you have to keep the interest up.
I hope there will be a new Vision line steam engine released with all the goodies!

I think that there are some nice new items in there. The CAB1-L, base and powermaster should be very popular, both as add-on's and also as a lower cost alternative to a full Legacy system. Also, they look to be a good solution for replacements of ageing TMCC systems. I'll be ordering the S.P. Tanktrain sets, and I'm sure that others will be very happy to see the extra tanktrain cars in other road-names.  I also need to calculate how many body parts I'll need to sell for the NS heritage fleet.

Zett,

It was me, and I guess I will not be buying any steam engines in the new Lionel catalog since there is no steam effects at all on any of them!

I'm shocked and don't understand.  Lionel had me hook, line and sinker (finally) and was exicited to buy more and now this.  The sounds, smoke and slow speed operation are still better than most of my engines, but its not enough for me to sell my older ones and spend $1200.  I'm speechless.  I will pay the extra money for these features as I'm sure many of you will also.

They must have some serious problems we don't know about like manufacturing costs, or high service cost that are causing them to loose money.  Otherwise I don't understand how they can produce a hit with the S3, J1, challenger, etc then pull back.   Maybe we will get some answers at the York show.

Maybe I am not understanding the comments above regarding lack of steam effect, but looking at the Lionel Volume 2 Catalog 2 (from link provided above) on pages 26, 27, 28 and 29 it is clearly stated "Whistle Steam Smoke Effect" for the U.P. 4-12-2, Santa Fe 3751 Class, and 4-6-2 Pacifics. Or am I looking at the wrong catalog?

i think the reference is to the J and the Daylite engines.

For the NS Heritage Fleet fans, Lionel did something baffling to me. They offer two powered numbers (real and fake) and one non-powered number (fake). That means, if you want more than one unit to operate, you have to buy all the Legacy powered units with the real numbers (to be accurate) or settle for fake numbers.

With these prices, I can barely afford the non-powered, but I would have purchased maybe 1 or 2 to operate behind something else but since they have fake numbers, what is the point? Lionel really missed the boat on this one!

I am sure MTH will be offering powered and dummy units of all the heritage units WITH the real numbers for those who only want the dummies or want to have multiple consists without having all powered units.

It also seems there are several previously cataloged items relisted. I guess sales have not been what Lionel had hoped for over the last 6 months or so. Like AMCDave, most of this catalog is well above my head. Will wait to see what MTH offers when their catalog comes out in 3 days.

MTH has already said that they will issue only 1 powered unit per road name and no dummy units. I think Lionel should have issued the dummy unit in 2 numbers, one with the real number and a fake. Myself I don't care because I will buy Lionel's real numbered power unit and the dummy. Should look great.

Maybe they could offer the non-powered units with a set of decals with different numbers, original one included, so people can chose whatever they like.

The Lionel vol 2 catalogue has always contains in the last few years lots of products who were already catologued in the vol 1...here come the question again why 2 volumes a years...1 is enough, at the beginning of the year and if new items arrise after that a simple flyer could be printed..also in today's world were everyone (most) look at new items on-line anyway, do printed catalog still make sense...(has been debated a couple of time in the past)

Are you sure about this?  I thought MTH was only offering powered units (hi-rail and scale wheelsets) of the Norfolk Southern heritage diesels.  No dummies that I saw cataloged in their 2012 Vol 2 catalog, which is when they listed the first set of NS heritage diesels to be offered (soon in fact).

This is an area where I think Lionel made a great decision.  For those folks who want to stay true to the prototype, well yes... you gotta ante up and pay for a powered unit.  But if you like the heritage paint schemes enough to make multi-unit diesel lash-ups, at least Lionel is giving enthusiasts the option to do their own thing with a mix-and-match approach.  Also don't forget that the street prices for these Lionel locomotives (powered and dummy) will be well below the MSRP in most cases.  Whereas MTH catalog prices are much closer to the actual street prices (in most cases).

Lionel's product manager for the steam locomotives (J, GS2, Mohawk) is gonna take a LOT of heat (and rightly so) for not delivering those locomotives with a full suite of advanced features.  But for these Norfolk Southern diesel units, I think the product manager made a great decision to offer multiple road numbers and dummies as well.

I hope someone asks about it at york. My dream engine now would be a heavy Mikado with whistle steam or a moving bell, or both!

All of the engines with steam effects in this catalog are re-issues. No complaints about those, the Santa Fe 3751 and the others are incredible engines.

The problem comes with those that are eagerly awaiting two of the most popular engines, the J and the Daylight, and many other engines, with steam effect features. If they are releasing them in this catalog, that tells me that they will not release them again for a few years, which means those waiting for the amazing features on these engines are still a few years out.

That is where the disappointment is. Obviously legacy is amazing and there is a ton to choose from.

Rich Im looking forward to ordering your 3rd DVD!

I still think Lionel should have offered the dummy units with the real numbers for those who cannot afford the powered units or who wanted a few powered units and the rest dummies. Yes, having several numbers is good for the operators who like certain schemes, but for the 3RS guys or those like me who want to be as prototypical as possible, it is as bad as the steam problem in the new N&W J.

Maybe Microscale will offer decals in O for the heritage units in the future so these dummy units can be renumbered correctly. As for MTH, hopefully they will reverse their decision on only powered units as well, if enough people request them.
