I have a question about the different F units in the new Lionel catalog.

I saw on railpictures.net pictures of the Milwaukee units pulling freight. Did they pull passenger cars too?

I was also wondering about the Burlington F3's. Did they have them? Is the model prototypical? I could only find E units on railpictures.net. I saw Burlington used both black and red striping on the nose. Is there any significance to the two colors?

If this has been covered elsewhere on here please give me a link. I couldn't find anything. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

The Burlington had three set of passenger F3's 9960ABC, 9961ABC and 9962ABC for California Zephyr service. The Lionel units are correct for this passenger service.

With the arrival of the E's in the 1950's, they were relegated to secondary passenger service and eventually repainted and regeared for freight service in 1955.   They retained their "passenger" numbers while in freight service.

They were the only Burlington F units to have steam generators.  All other Burlington F's from FT's to F7's were freight units.

The black stripes on the passenger units were to simulate the "look" of the early shovel-nose Zephyrs.  The black was changed to Chinese Red in 1959 as hood units began to be repainted in the new Chinese Red "redbird" scheme.
