I have both numbers. for the $$, IMHO it's not worth it. For a true PRR fan, there are many incorrect details that cannot be fixed because the "crew Talk" will always refer to the original factory road number.
HEre are some of the issure I have with it:
- incorrect "western " gp9 locomotive plate on front of loco- correct for cxb&Q, DRGW, and the other raod names but not the PRR.
- dangling air tanks by the fuel tank. This is unwarranted considering Lionel got it right with the GP7 a few years ago.
- speaking of Fuel tanks, Lionel used the incorrect Phase II fuel tank [shortened side skirts and fuel filler on opposite side of tank] with Phase 1 road numbers. The Fuel filler s/b between the air tanks and the fuel tank, not the fuel tank end underneath the loco cab! [ see pics below]
- Finally as seen above, the PRR trainphone antenna connection was on the front or long hood of the loco. Lionel made their cheapie Trainphone connection incorrectly on the High short hood [see below]
Well the choice is yours, If the above details don't bother you for the price that you are paying [ hopefully way under MSRP or BTO pre- order price] and you love the legacy electronics the go for it. If you are paying top dollar, I would say no.
Note : MTH recently came out with similar Railking GP9's. The MTH RK versions have PS3 and the incorrect builders plate and no trainphone antenna, BUT they also don't have crew talk that announces the road number AND the CORRECT fuel tank! For the RK price, you can FIX the minor decrepencies [ add a Cal Scale brass Trainphone antenna, add marker lights, and wipe out the pad printed builders plate] to have a correct PRR GP9 for a more resonable price.
