I am interested to hear any side by side comparisons of these two locomotives from anyone who happens to own both

Specifically, I looking to understand how they compare in these areas. Is the Y-3 better, equal to, or not as good.

  1. level of detail
  2. quality of sound system (I realize in general Legacy has improved on sound)
  3. accuracy of sound/whistle
  4. reliability/pulling power
  5. quality of finish
  6. any other intangibles.

Thanks in advance

  1. level of detail  Equal To - top notch. Note that the Legacy version of the Y3 comes with the road pilot unlike the early version that came with a footboard pilot.
  2. quality of sound system (I realize in general Legacy has improved on sound) Better because of 4 exhausts/rev. and getting away from the backward simple/compound change of sounds which has been a big bug-a-boo for the Y6b and early version Y3. (You can hear one on the Lionel web site at: Lionel Legacy N&W Y3 )
  3. accuracy of sound/whistle Spot on. Note that the Legacy version has been updated to, what most of you will recognize as the normal, N&W "Hooter" whistle. The first version of the Y3 came with the early version N&W whistle that not many people are familiar with.
  4. reliability/pulling power Should be equal to
  5. quality of finish Equal to - top notch
  6. any other intangibles.

Thanks in advance

You are welcome,

Spot on?   This i have to respectfully  disagree with..... Ironically the ONLY Correct hooter whistle from anyone I ve heard was put into a little Imperial Y6.  When i find the video Ill post it. The new Legacy Y3 has the same exact whistle and sounds as they put in the earlier released Legacy N&W "mallet".

Ironically the ONLY Correct hooter whistle from anyone I ve heard was put into a little Railking Y6.  When i find the video Ill post it. In addition the new Legacy Y3 has the same exact whistle and sounds as they put in the earlier released Legacy N&W "mallet". Which i why is didnt get the y3 (besides no extra effects)not to mention the earlier Y3 was and is one the smoothest runners out there which is  the second reason why i didnt buy another one just for a different road number...

John are you wanting a comparison of the NEW Y3 to the JLC Y6?  Or the earlier Y3.Not that theres much difference..

Patrick, the new legacy y-3

I'll have to respectfully disagree with that. Lionel's N&W Hooter so good it will put chills up your spine!

John,
I don't think you will be disappointed.

Patrick,

The purpose of my original post was not to compare them to the real ones, but to compare them to each other. Since you have them both I would still like to hear your views.

i suggested to start a different thread so not to jack yours...

The new Y3 smokes better than the JLCY6

The Y6 is more detailed especially in the cab and bigger.

Paint  is  the same.

The Y6 is way louder but sounds like tribal people beating on a drum in the jungle at certain speeds and its whistle is also strong but sounds like the command whale car sound at the end of the whistle .

So id say the Y3 is alot more realistic in changing labor and start up etc..

being that you seem interested in N&W engines i just wanted to point out that the new Y3 has the same exact sounds voice whistle etc... as the earlier N&W mallet.

If i didnt have any of them it would be hard to decide between the Legacy Y3 and the JLC Y6. Y6 much better looking..Y3 much better sounding and smoking. Neither, give a hoot.
