I recently purchased TWO Lionel Legacy SW-1 Switchers- a Burlington Northern 2233390 SW-1 #97 and a Lionel Legacy SW-1 Conrail 2233400 8408.  No problem with the Burlington.  BUT, after 2 or 3 days, the Conrail now has its front wheels spinning and the engine not being able to go through an 036 curve with only 1 or 2 cars on it. Track voltage is 18 volts.

BUT, it CAN by going in REVERSE. This behavior did NOT occur right out of the box.  I DID replace the tires, and even checked to see if the rear truck's universal joint was engaged. There appeared to be plenty of grease in the gear box also. Everything appears to be normal, but no matter what 036 curve I try to go through, the engine just starts spinning its front wheels and the rear wheels hardly move if anything.   I'm thinking of sending it right back for warranty replacement since it is less than a week old unless there's something simple that I'm missing.

PS- I KNOW enough to realize this switcher both in reality and as a model was NOT designed to pull a long consist, and I have only been pulling 4 or 5 cars at most. The heaviest car would be the DairyMen's League Operating Milk car.  I also made sure all the rolling stock wheels were well oiled, and not binding. I am really stumped on this because- again- the Burlington Northern Legacy SW-1  is IDENTICAL to this, (except for the body) and works just fine.

I cannot rotate the rear wheels OR the front wheels. Could there be some kind of alignment issue with the rear worm gear? But if there was, wouldn't the FRONT wheels be stuck?

Thats normal depending on the gear angle even if the motor was not connected.

The engine has a horizontal motor with two tiny U Joints on each end. May not be visible from the underside. You would likely have to remove the shell to see what the problem is.

Well, after changing tires for the second or third time, taking the trucks off to see if the u-joints are broken, I've given up, and packed it all up and am returning this particular 2233400 Conrail Legacy SW-1. In the meantime, I am wondering if maybe I contributed to its premature demise by adding not too many cars, but WEIGHT?

Here's what I have:

3469 Dump car- weighs 1 lb

Dairymen's League Operating Milk Car 1 lb. 4 oz

Barrel car A.T. & S.F.   1 lb

Gondola car  8 oz.

I'm pulling these cars around an inner loop because that's where most of my accessories are.

So, the grand total is 3 pounds, 12 ounces. I don't know how to translate as  the pulling weight, and I wish I knew if there was a spec on this SW1??.  Does pulling around that 3 pounds 12 ounces on the track seem to be excessive to anyone for these Lionel Legacy SW1's???? I am now concerned that I might damage my other SW1. I  seem to recall someone in this forum did mention that Lionel installed some protective load circuit that would "kick in" to PREVENT motor damage????
