My Lionel Legacy Mogul arrived today, my first Legacy locomotive.

It is a very nice looking little engine - a perfect size for my small layout. I purchased the Central Vermont engine. I hope to one day call the Green Mountains home one day.

My engine ran horrifically out of the box. Thinking of the usual suspects, I went to get my razor blade and sliced off the traction tires. Once again, the Lionel traction tires caused binding and terrible performance. Without the traction tires, it is glass smooth. Very impressive and it looks to be a very, very nice runner. I don't think I've EVER seen a smaller O Gauge tender...can only imagine how crammed that is inside!

I currently operate my layout conventionally. I have, in the past, operated DCS and TMCC (pre-Legacy). I do not have a  Legacy system at this time but would not rule out purchasing one someday.

Another subject to note - the blank number plate under the headlight. I'd have to dig up some photos of the real ones to see if this is prototypical but I kind of doubt it. Would it have been that hard to paint "397" there?

Operational Issue - My engine will NOT respond to direction changes when throttling down and back up such as typical in conventional operation. It WILL respond just fine if the direction button is used. Is this typical of Legacy locos? I'm using Z-4000s. Tried two different transformers and saw the same results.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with it. I'd like to understand the conventional direction change procedure a bit better.....

I have a NYC version of this loco from a few years back. It's actually a Boston and Maine prototype, I think (correct me if I'm wrong), but it's generic enough to stand in for the NYC, based on photos.

These are really nice locos, and I would like another to re-letter for another road, but they are not cheap. It took me quite a while to find my slightly-used NYC version for around $465 2 or so years ago. Haven't checked the prices lately. Most of them seemed to go for $650+.

The blank number plate (or is it just the smokebox door front?) is not an impossible thing to see on a real loco, but I haven't looked for any CV photos of these. May be hard to find, even on the InterWebs.

Don't forget that this is not a CV loco, and is being adapted to that road, so the blank front may emulate the number-board-less CV front end.

Just speculation.
