Additional information in conjunction with George Brown's article in Run 268 about the Lionel Speeders.

The N&W used this type of "Motorcar" in its hump and inclined yards at Bluefield & Roanoke (possibly others). A brakeman would ride the car being humped down the hill controlling the car's speed with the hand brake. These motorcars were used to retrieve the brakemen and transport them back to the hump.

 

In the photo below, notice the bench seat visible through the right hand window and the coal stove visible through the left hand window along with its smokestack.
