hey, Guys:  Am I the only one who picked up on this?  In the new catalog Lionel announced the reissue of the NYC "S" class locomotive, but on page 26 and 27 they are actually offering a "set" with three freight cars, but what's cute is that the engine and cars are all painted up in bright colors like pre-war, stamped metal, tinplate cars!  They are even sporting brass number and name plates.

I find this really humorous because MTH has been making their replica, pre-war trains and some of them have "modern" or scale type paint jobs on them.  So, am I the only one who sees this juxtaposition, here?  This HAS  to be a Mike Reagan idea!  This whole idea really smacks of Mike's sense of humor.  I think that it's just one little, last gift that he left with Lionel upon his leaving.

"A FAUX tinplate set has some limited appeal." Really? It's more appealing than an orange SP AC-9.

"Hopefully, they have corrected the pantograph issue and the Odyssey lurch of the TMCC versions!" What lurch? What pantograph problem? I have both the S-1 and S-2 TMCC locos, and neither has a lurch, or a pantograph "problem."

Those little pantographs on the real thing were used only on complicated crossovers/switches and such, you know - NYC electrics were outside third rail equipment.

Mine had a lurch in Odyssey mode and the pantographs would pop-up from the normal positon and look wrong. Others have mentioned these problems.

Can't speak to the pantograph issue, but I do not beleive any legacy locos have the Lurch issue.  I know none of the legacy locos I've owned had it.  And I'm pretty sure Oddessey 2 (which legacy locos have) was said to solve the lurch.

That's a good one Paul. When I talked with Mike last week I mentioned that the new catalogs came in the mail. He said I have to guess which items are his ideas. Not sure if there is a prize.

I have the early TMCC version and it has a "speed step jump", but it is not to be confused with the early Odyssey lurch that Lionel had in locomotive produced in the early years or 2000-2002. I was able to smooth this speed step jump by keeping the wheels clean and running it with a CAB 2 in TMCC mode.

The pantagraphs are very fragile and as discussed before they tend to break. Not sure if there will be a more robust solution with this release.
