lionel new york central L-2a mohawk 4-8-2 tender issues

It may just be a bad pot or bad connection. The wires from the pot to the board may just have to be reseated. Remove the shell and reseat all the connections.

Removed the shell, everything seems to be connected okay, but now no railsounds just buzz.

Is the pot still connected? With the pot disconnected you will not get any sound.

One other thing, you can test the sound without coupling to the engine. Just set the tender on the track and turn up the voltage. If its working you will get some background sounds.

I had the late 90s TMCC version (don't have Lionel number).

I sent it back to Lionel 3 times with 3 different problems with the electronics.

They had a lot of problems with this locos electronics.

Believe it or not, Lionel refunded my purchase cost!

I doubt that would happen today.

That did make me a satisfied customer!

Just came across this thread when I was actually looking for something else. Greg - did you ever get your engine fixed?  And Jeff - his engine was likely either Lionel item # 6-18009 (from 1990 or 91) or 6-18064 (1998).

Those are both L-3 Mohawks - he has the L-2a.

I see, Randy.  Might it be 6-38053 (Engine #2793)  from 2003 then?                                       It's always helpful when a Poster includes the item number - if at all possible.

Mine was the 18064.

It had TMCC and Railsounds and all the electronics were a mess, which is why Lionel refunded my money.

Others had similar problems with it.

I do also have the 18009, conventional, and it is a superb conventional locomotive. I still run it often.
