Did anyone here attend the event? I read in the VL Challenger post on the 3R forum that rumor has it that an S scale Polar Express train will be in the catalog. Just wondering if anyone can confirm? That would be something of interest to me. I'm interested in seeing where Lionel is going. A mid sized steam offering like the Berk and some new passenger cars would be a good step for S IMHO.

It is not a rumor. They are planning on making a Polar Express in S-gauge.
What will be pulling it?

Never mind, there is a picture of the set in the thread johnny mentioned. Any other S gauge news from the Lionel event???

That picture looks like a more traditional Flyer style Berk. Doesn't look like a new scale model to my eye. Same with the cars. I was hoping for new scale tooling.

If it is not new tooling I could see how that would be a little disappointing for the scaleified crowd (me included), but if the Polar Express is really Lionel's best selling set ever, it can't hurt the future of S to have it available in a RTR set.

Brian,
Was there anything else there in the way of up coming American Flyer?
Thanks for the pictures.

Well, that means a lower price point than a full-scale model. As a starter set, it's going to have to be priced competitively with the O27 set.
Hopefully, it will get some folks interested in S. People gotta start somewhere.
I think we'll still see a scale-tooled Berk in the future.

I'm sure it will be good for Lionel. A starter set makes sense. Just not what I was looking for.
So if it isn't going to be a newly tooled engine, what are Lionel going to be using? Are they going to be utilising an engine from the Gilbert era or something they have done themselves since?
Neil
The gold colored engine does not resemble anything Gilbert ever made. Also looks more detailed than a normal Gilbert engine. Other than the square type dome it doesn't look like the engine shown with the passenger cars and neither does the tender. Maybe preliminary artwork?

The gold colored locomotive is a gold-plated Polar Express locomotive for the 3-rail O folks.

Judging by the photo, it looks like Lionel is doing a basic-detailed Berkshire for the S gauge Polar express. Probably using the Mikado drive mechanism.
Rusty
The gold engine is going to be a very limited production O gauge issue of the Berkshire in honor of the 10th anniversary of the Movie.
