Which Alco model would you be talking about?

I can speak for the 2003-2005 Alco S-2 switchers. Detail-wise they are great and the fixed pilots are the biggest plus. It would seem Lionel actually tried to include some unique road-specific details among the different TMCC releases too, such as different smokestacks, cab antennae, and the orientation of the front grill slats. My only complaint with the TMCC releases is that the "diesel roar" is that of a full-sized locomotive, not the authentic clunky sound of a little Alco switcher. For that, MTH got it spot-on and Lionel's new Legacy run of these switchers also sound much more accurate.

I have the 6-38147 GN Alco FA-2 A-A set from 2003. It is a smooth runner and is nicely decorated. I have had trouble with one coupler that is reluctant to release unless the track voltage is above 18 volts. (I like to keep my voltage low, at about 16V.)  I can probably fix that easily with some graphite powder, I just haven't gotten around to it. In general, though, I recommend these locos.
