Sorry, probably a basic question but I just received a new Lionel W&LE Mallet, (6-38012) that was produced in 2001. On the "Lubricating your locomotive" page in the manual the schematic points to 3 screws on the bottom of the engine and it says to grease these. They run down the center of the engine. Do you remove the screws and grease underneath? Thanks

Mth recommends .5 -1.0 ml of grease to gearboxes.

I find this a good guide as to "how much" in any brand loco.

I use an old baby medicine syringe from when my kids were little as it has a breakdown in ml.
