We provided a meal for a bereaved family at our church today. Someone brought 2 sandwich trays from Subway. The sandwiches were cut and presented in the first 3 rows and the back compartment was filled with the toppings. I think it will make a great parts tray. It is approximately 14" X 20".

Would a silverware tray work for your needs?  Very similar to the sandwich tray above.  Just look for the ones that are "generic shaped" (not dedicated shapes for forks, spoons, etc.)  They are designed to fit in kitchen drawers...and the ones we have would fit in a desk drawer...except the desk drawers are so clutter, no room for important stuff.

My wife found a modular plastic drawer tray system. It has various shapes that snap together.

I save useful plastic trays, like the frosting cups from breakfast rolls, plastic trays from Stouffers frozen foods, and the plastic cups from Italian Ices.

When I was using film, I saved quite a few of the film canisters.

The Subway sub tray does look useful

This post is awakens a wonderful opportunity to learn what folks are re-purposing for parts storage.

First and foremost, I buy 99-cent 6-quart plastic shoe containers at Walmart. I label them with masking tape and use them to store track items (10" Real Trax straights  & o42 switches will fit), electronics, scenery materials, rolling stock projects, etc. These containers stack nicely and look good on the inexpensive plastic shelves you can buy from Home Depot, etc.

I reuse the white plastic containers with clear lids that Chinese food comes in. I find these ideal for storing project parts that are too small for the shoe containers.

Third are the small (1/2-ounce) plastic measuring cups that come with some medicines (cough medicine). These are ideal for mixing small amounts of latex paint, and for cleaning tiny parts with rubbing alcohol.
