I googled C&O caboose looking for what a steam era caboose should look like. For steam era a center cupola with 2 windows per side would be ideal. Similar to a Weaver Northeastern but two windows vs 4 windows. I saw some made by Lionel, Industrial Rail, and K-Line but they all appear fairly toylike with not great detail.
Has anyone else made these like 3rd Rail or in kit form? These would be lettered C&O not Chessie System so maybe 1940s??? TIA

Atlas makes 3 rail, C&O steel sided cabooses. They are accurate for the C&O . I have one of theirs in the 1948 red paint scheme. I believe they are also doing the late 1950's yellow paint scheme but I don't think they've been released yet. The Rich Yoder brass C&O wood sided ones are extremely well done and priced accordingly.
For pictures of the actual cabooses go to the C&O Historical Society's website and click on archives. Enter caboose in the search box and you will get hundreds of caboose pictures.

Thanks Ken, further searching has shown the Atlas cabeese. They would work too but like Yoders, the boat has sailed. Will be checking the usual sources.

If I remember correctly, Quality Craft offered correct C&O wood caboose kits, quite a few years ago. Some may still be around.
I think the Atlas ones are just Magor cabeese. No idea if they are accurate or not. Beth has them on pre-order at Public Delivery Track.

I never even knew there was a USRA caboose design, and I have no idea if the C&O had them.

I'm pretty sure I have an unbuilt Quality Craft C&O wood side caboose kit somewhere. If you're interested let me know. I also have a Right of Way C&O steel side caboose (red, 1948 paint scheme) which is surplus in my collection. Brass construction and very accurate.
The C&O had several Northeastern style cabeese obtained from the Western Maryland in the 60's. All of these were painted yellow.

I built a Gloor one years ago but didn’t do that great a job on it. I picked another one up not too long ago and will probably build it if I get another Allegheny. The challenge will be to find proper trucks for it.
It might also be worth hunting around for older brass models. Not sure who made this but I picked it up at the Cleveland 2 rail show last year. Needs a little work:
I built a C&O wood quality craft kit a few years ago. Below is the thread of its construction (and others) when I was going through a caboose building phase. I wouldn’t use styrene again for the roof ( stay with the wood they provided) as it seemed to warp a bit where I cut the hole for the coupla access. I spent a lot of time on interiors that were not included with the kits.
