I saw one go by, at night, a few years ago. Sparky for sure.

I figured the best(?) job must have been the guy on the fire-hose putting out the hot spots from the rear deck. The worst job might be changing the grinding wheels with all that crusty grinder slag all over the place. Constant hiring ads seen in our regional newspapers when one of these was around.

I'm familiar with Speno rail grinders but not   Loram.

As a young" green " brakeman I was part of a crew in  train order territory protecting  the work. We had a SW (1300) equipped with some type of special  cruise control  to keep a steady grinding speed.... Caboose and a full crew ..

The scary part... I  had to flag an hot freight  , stop him and  bring  him  into the work limits. I  had never flagged anything before and I didn't have much time to get out the proper distance , get the torpedoes down  and find a spot on  straight track where the enginemen could see the  my flag from a distance. I can hear him coming in the distance.

Along comes the train. mostly  cars of paper and lumber... Guns go off,, Hogger gives  2 on the horn . and most of  the train goes by  me  .

And of course the hogger curses me out for not being out far enough.   yep scary at the time.
