I have had an issue with various PS-2 engines ether losing their sound and/or losing the ability to control the speed using the roller wheel in the remote.

I recently upgraded to 5.0 but this issue carried over from before the update.  Doing a feature reset resolves the problem but it seems to happen all the tIke which should not happen.  I have the Rev. L TIU.  The loop is fairly small.

Track is clean.  I ran the signal test and it showed all 10 which frankly seems odd to  me as I usually only got 7-9 in the past.  I do not know if the update made improvement to signal strength which is why I am getting 10 now.

i had hoped to have the wi-if module by now to see if that made a difference but it looks like a week or so away.

This has been a nagging problem all along but until now it was low on the priority list.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Ed

Dave,

Thanks for letting me know about the signal strength improvement.  That is a pleasant surprise to know I really do have 10’s all around.  I actually thought I was also having an issue with the signal strength test.

I doubt it can be an engine problem since it happens to any of the ones I have used.  So I guess that leaves the remote.  Are the remotes repairable, and/or are they worth getting repaired?

As I mentioned I am going to try the wi-if module.  If all works well using that then it surely has to be the remote.

BTW The batteries are new in the remote.

Thank you for the help.

ED,

You never indicated whether you purchased the latest DCS Hand Held Remote Control with your Rev L TIU, if not you may have a mismatch TIU & Remote Control, which could be causing you problems also.  Everything should be to the latest revision.  I had a run away because of this problem about a year ago, I finally got every thing matched to the latest Rev and my DCS works great now.  Are your DCS components matched correctly?

PCRR/Dave

Ed, what Dave means is that both and remote should have the same revision of the software.  All DCS hardware, regardless of vintage, is compatible.  The remote controls are essentially unchanged since the first release.  Date of purchase is meaningless when it comes to ascertaining what version is in a remote or a TIU.  Remote version is displayed when you turn on the remote; TIU version can be displayed through the menu option on the remote.

Do be aware that if you run the track signal test, occasionally it will turn the volume down to the lowest setting.  If no sound after exiting the test, hit a volume up button 9-12 times.

Dave,

You had me going there for a minute thinking there were different model remotes. I thought how could I not know that.  Thanks RJR for clearing that up.

Both the TIU and Remote were updated to 5.0 at the same time.

As I mentioned this issue predates the 5.0 update.  I think  Dave identified the issue is with the remote.  Since I am getting 10 signal strength I am assuming the TIU is working properly and the track is ok.  This happens to all engines so it is not an engine problem.   That leaves the remote.

I am anxious to receive the wi-if module to see if the problem goes away or not using that method.

One last question.  Would it be of any benefit to solder the track joints given that I am already getting 10 on the entire loop?   I had to do that on the old track configuration to achieve good signal strength.

Thank you,

Ed

RJR,

I did catch the info about losing sound after running a signal test.  That happened when I was trouble shooting and did figure out to just increase the volume back up.

Going to give it another shot troubleshooting this afternoon. Maybe I'll figure it out thru dumb luck since reason and rational it's working

But thanks for asking.
