A sound problem that just developed on my Lionel 0-8-0 switcher which stood unused for about 4 weeks.

Smoke, couplers, lights and movement work well but the Railsounds are inaudible. I can just hear the chuff, whistle, coupler and brake squeal if I put my ear next to the tender with the volume pot turned fully up. Pressing key 1 doesn't make the sounds any louder.

Any ideas for a solution gratefully received!

First off, look for a volume control.  If it has one, try moving it from stop to stop a few times, see if that improves things.  Next, I'd do the time-honored thing and reseat all the boards and connectors.  Next, I'd probably try a different speaker, just because it's a cheap and easy test.  Finally, I'd swap the RailSounds boards, one at a time, from a working unit.  Given that you have the sound at all, I'd start with the audio board.

What do you get for sound with the tender on the track without the locomotive?  Please do what John and Bill stated and if that does not help, pull both chips from the Railsounds audio board and reseat them.  Your volume pot goes to pins 16-18-20 on the Railsounds audio board.  If you have to bypass the volume pot, connect wires from pin 18 to pin 16 from the Railsounds audio board and you will get full constant volume if your problem was the pot.  This is done very easy at the pot by jumping the wires.
