Lucas Red-n-tacky #2

I packed some into a plastic syringe that has a curved tip that I found at my LHS.   Works great and the longer curved tip definitely helps for getting it in the right places.  

I'd like to find some small tube like applicator that can be loaded without making a mess!

 

Hopefully someone has found a good way to do that and chimes in.

The reason it is in a tube, this stuff is what you use

 for preventative maintenance, on 18 wheel tractors,

just have to use , freeze pop sticks dob it down in syringes,

best can be done, it is the BEST on the market !!

Put it in a $2 basting syringe I found at the grocery store. 

I use a toothpick as an applicator.

Bamboo barbecue skewer with the point cut off is a good grease applicator. Leave the point on and it's good for cleaning commutator segments in motors or removing fuzz and gunk around exposed gears. 

I use a curved syringe, same as Audidriven uses. It allows for precise application of grease exactly where you want it.

You could also try a small grease gun if they make the tubes of grease in the smaller size then put a needle tip on the end of the gun eh

I'm with CHAD, small screw in needle on end of the grease gun cost about 2 bucks.  I used it for years.

I use a toothpick of small bit of scrap wood.

However, the curved nose syringe sounds like a very good upgrade.

I have not seen it in any other form factor, As posted it is made for a standard grease gun and use on large equipment.

Just a happy side effect that it's so good for us.

Never heard of it, and based on what you guys said, I want to get some.

 

Amazon lists three, as follows (pics). Which is the one you guys use?

All three are the same product. Just your call as to the most convenient packaging. I got a tube, but I would have preferred to store the tub had it been available.

Started using this on the motor gears and truck gears and it's amazing.  It just sticks and lubes!

Jim Barrett did a story on this product a few years ago. Great stuff. I use the curved tip syringe and like Gerry said it is kind of hard to squeeze the plunger down on the syringe tube. However, when it starts coming out it works fine. You only need a tiny spec of it.

To those that use the tiny syringe, do you have any issues squeezing the grease out? Are you able to have control over the amount you are using or does it all just run out because you have to push too much on the plunger?

I use a  plastic baby medicine syringe from when my kids were small, I imagine you could pick one up at a local dept store or pharmacy. These are larger and move the grease just fine, the ml measurements on the side help you know exactly how much your adding. I believe MTH recommends adding .5-1.0 ml.

Benii, it is somewhat difficult to get the grease flowing out of the syringe but that actually works to one's advantage. You don't need much red n' tacky to get the job done. The slow dispensing by the syringe keeps me from accidentally over applying grease.

Seems like a great combo.....14 gauge for grease, 20 for oil etc.  The seller is very helpful. He talked me into these as opposed to the ones I was originally looking at because the tips have Luer locks.  Having a cap is very helpful as well (as opposed to the curved syringes that are just open).

you could put your red and tacky into

a regular grease gun and then use that

to sqeeze the grease into the food injector.

Below is a photo I just took of my new applicators for lubrication. The two syringes are part of an Ebay order (see link above) that included 8 syringes.......2 x 30,20,10, 5ml with 8 needles of 4 gauges (with Luer locks) and assorted caps. They are excellent. One of the syringes pictured is filled with Red and Tacky (which I recently switched to) and the other is filled with SuperLube. I'd been using SuperLube for 4 years and it's a great grease, but I wanted something a bit thicker and stickier for gears. I was a bit concerned with  R and Ss plastic/rubber compatibility, but I called Lucas and  the tech assured me that it was completely compatible. The bottle is from a set of two in another Ebay purchase. 2 ounces, with 2 18 gauge Luer Lock needles and caps. It's filled with Mobil 1 (which is another recent switch). I replaced the 18 gauge needles with two 20 gauge needles that were part of my syringe order. The caps I made from rubber furniture "feet" that I drilled out for the needles. Very pleased with all the new applicators and lube choices.

I also use a syringe but it took me a while to find an appropriate tip.  The tool guy in black or purple hall at York sells them.  I prefer the plastic tips for safety reasons.  My biggest problem is getting enough Red n Tacky into the syringe in the first place, you have to pull the handle back nice and slowly.  I like a tip that will fit into the MTH engine holes for grease after removing the screws.  Works great.

Getting the Red and Tacky in that 30 ml syringe proved to be very easy. I broke a wooden paint stirrer lengthwise so it would fit into the syringe. Because the Lucas is so thick, I twisted it in the grease and came up with a ball of it on the end that fit right into the syringe. About 5 or 6 of these loads of grease topped it off. Much neater and quicker than I thought it would be. I used a 14 gauge needle on that syringe....perfect.

R&T2 stays on outside gears such as found on diesels and some steamers.  It just stays there!

Would you apply Red and Tacky #2 to all of the normal grease areas on MTH steam and diesel engines?  Any precautions??

Do you have to clean out the old grease before applying the R&T or will it mix with white grease ok?

I have a needle with a grease fitting in the end and I just refill my tube of grease from the MTH lube set.

The issue of compatibility is concerning me a bit (since I've switched over my oil to Mobil 1 and switching to Lucas). I know that car dealers tell you to use regular oil or synthetic, but not to mix (or is that a wive's tale?). Has anyone had any issues when putting either Mobil 1 over their old oil or Lucas over their old grease?

It's a tale.  Ford dealers(others too probably) use synthetic blends for oil changes.  I top off with whatever is on the shelf in the garage.

I contacted pennzoil recently about petroleum vs synthetic oils in my equipment  -  mixing, benefits, problems, etc.  

 

They advised:

 

petroleum/synthetic oils are compatible (at any mix ratio).

one can follow the other with no major issues (however they pointed out that synthetic following petroleum will ultimately flush all petroleum out, at full strength).

for a scientific reason I don't readily recall, synthetic gets into spaces of closer tolerances than petroleum, adheres to surfaces better, and reduces friction more effectively than petrolium

synthetic is not destructive to plastic/rubber components.

 

From the standpoint of cleaning out old oil, good surface adhesion, and compatibility with rubber and plastic;  syn oil may be a good choice in some lube applications for model/toy trains where grease is not necessary.
