Maintaining jointed rail?

Back in the days when busy mainlines were jointed rail and were well-maintained...did they have equipment that tightened the joints...or was it done by hand?

Machine, we don't got no stinkin' machine. A LLOONNGG wrench will do. There have been several posts earlier on this forum complete with movies showing section gangs at work.
