The gearbox vs servo issue might be a weight, accuracy and speed choice. Or cost; as servo prices are pretty good now. (kinda funny overall too as a servo is usually a gearmotor; it just "listens" closer )

They are also similar to "stepper motors" in that motor feedback is used in implimenting more exacting operation.    If you wanted to get nuts here is the beginning of a tracking/aiming system.

A 360° ring and pickup to the turrent might be tough. An audio jack may have modified to be driven off the plug. Easier would be a chassis wheel turning the turrent's belly, with the audio jack acting as the pivot post.   "Plug-n-fire"

They do have max 360° stop to stop and 360° continuous, the former would work to use wire without twists... a valid thought btw.

I like the idea of an audio jack as part of what could have been a good solution!  That project was a very fun one for me.  I do wish I might have started with this boxcar.  This box car was easier in most aspects
