John you have definitely helped me with all my customized cars This I think is my first one I did without your help. I really appreciate your knowledge and insight!
I have done very very simple boards, just ones to control a relay.
Time to move upscale!
The gearbox vs servo issue might be a weight, accuracy and speed choice. Or cost; as servo prices are pretty good now. (kinda funny overall too as a servo is usually a gearmotor; it just "listens" closer )
They are also similar to "stepper motors" in that motor feedback is used in implimenting more exacting operation. If you wanted to get nuts here is the beginning of a tracking/aiming system.
A 360° ring and pickup to the turrent might be tough. An audio jack may have modified to be driven off the plug. Easier would be a chassis wheel turning the turrent's belly, with the audio jack acting as the pivot post. "Plug-n-fire"
They do have max 360° stop to stop and 360° continuous, the former would work to use wire without twists... a valid thought btw.
I recall that caboose. Fun stuff...
(jumps up & down chanting)..."Show-it-again! Show-it-again!

I like the idea of an audio jack as part of what could have been a good solution! That project was a very fun one for me. I do wish I might have started with this boxcar. This box car was easier in most aspects
here is a link to that car:
