Since I'm new to Flyer I have a question......How did Gilbert manage the link-to-knuckle coupler transition in the early 50s. It seems to me that without careful planning, there could have been chaos. How did they do it? How did it go?
Ok......but what if you had trains from 46-50.....and wanted to add to your railroad after 52.....were there transition trucks/couplers so that the 2 could mesh?
They also offered a conversion kit. Every now and then a seller on Ebay will mention that an old AF car (600 series) has been changed to knuckle couplers.
Kits were offered to change links to knuckle couplers. This basically amounted to a knuckle coupler held onto the link style truck frame with a split rivet. While it worked in principal it didn't look all that great.
What I'd suggest is to pickup a couple of inexpensive AF cars at York. We can modify them with a link on one end and a knuckle on the other. FWIW, my Passenger set has link couplers, and my brother's freight was knuckles.
