The Marx and early Lionel both used the "pin point resting in the dimpled bulb" approach and neither work very well. Some say that current production bulbs are much more efficient and just don't generate enough heat to really turn the small fan blades in the top of the beacon housing. 

Lionel then developed the vibrating motor variety in which the beacon housing has a rubber ring outfitted with small "fingers" to allow the housing to spin. These work very well.

 

I do have 1 of each the vibrating motor made by lionel and a marx with the fan blades which spins after about 4/5 minutes lit.

True the vibrating motor lionel spins faster of course with same voltage applied.

For the old marx 0446  i now see has 2 different style beacon tops available for it as was wondering if one style top was better than the other.
